The Metropolitan Epiphaniy, Patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, has delivered a scathing rebuke to Russia following a devastating attack that set ablaze the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the holiest places in Orthodox Christianity.
"What more must the Kremlin's Antichrist do for the world to realize that decisive actions are necessary to end Russian terror against Ukraine and restore peace principles?" Epiphaniy questioned as flames engulfed parts of the historic sanctuary.
According to Ukrinform, the religious leader accompanied his statement with images of the fire, condemning the strike that hit "the roof of one of the holiest places in the Christian world," referring to the revered Dormition Cathedral within the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex.
Established in 1051, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is regarded as the spiritual birthplace of Slavic Orthodox Christianity. For nearly a millennium, it has been a pivotal religious hub in Eastern Europe and a symbol of Ukraine's historical identity, as well as the nation's oldest monastery.
UNESCO recognized the site in 1990 for its remarkable historical, architectural, and religious significance. The site's golden-domed churches and renowned catacombs attract thousands of pilgrims and tourists annually.
The attack was part of a massive aerial assault where Russia launched numerous missiles and hundreds of drones across various Ukrainian regions. Kyiv officials reported multiple casualties and injuries throughout the country.
For Epiphaniy, the bombing signifies more than a military assault.
Since Russia's invasion in 2022, the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has consistently accused the Kremlin of seeking to obliterate not only Ukraine's sovereignty but also its historical, cultural, and religious identity.
In previous remarks, the cleric criticized the ideology of the "Russian World" (Russkiy Mir), promoted by Moscow, as a political tool to justify war and subjugate Ukraine. He also accused the Russian Orthodox Church hierarchy of supporting the Kremlin's military aggression.
The destruction or damage to cultural and religious sites has been a recurring concern among international organizations during the conflict. UNESCO has recorded damages to hundreds of Ukrainian monuments, museums, churches, and historical buildings since February 2022.
The Kyiv Lavra itself has been at the heart of tensions between Ukraine and Russia due to its immense symbolic significance for both Orthodox traditions.
As firefighters battled the blaze, the monastery's bells tolled over Ukraine's capital, a scene many saw as a symbol of resistance against one of the most shocking attacks on the country's religious heritage since the invasion began.
"This is a crime against our history and our faith," declared President Volodymyr Zelensky, who vowed that the sanctuary would be restored.
Epiphaniy's remark, labeling Vladimir Putin as the "Kremlin's Antichrist," has gone viral, resonating widely as one of the most powerful reactions to the damage inflicted on one of Europe's most significant Christian monuments.
