The United States Embassy in Cuba shared a message on its official Facebook page this Sunday celebrating President Donald Trump's 80th birthday. The post also served as a politically symbolic gesture aimed at Cubans yearning for freedom on the island.

"Today, we celebrate a significant birthday... that of President Trump. It's amazing to see social media brimming with birthday messages for the U.S. President on this day. Today is also Flag Day, which stands for our unity and freedom," the diplomatic mission announced.

June 14 is particularly symbolic this year as it marks not only Trump's birthday and Flag Day in the United States but also falls within the 250th anniversary of American independence (1776-2026), commemorated globally by the State Department's #Freedom250 campaign.

In the Cuban context, the explicit mention of the flag symbolizing "our unity and freedom" and the use of the #Freedom250 hashtag deliver a direct message to the island's citizens. This aligns with the public diplomacy strategy the embassy has been implementing on social media under the leadership of Mike Hammer, who has headed the mission since November 2024.

This approach is not unprecedented. On May 28, the embassy celebrated Marco Rubio’s birthday with a photo of the Secretary of State and Hammer making the "L" for Liberty gesture, triggering a wave of messages from Cubans demanding a "free Cuba."

The #Freedom250 campaign has also encouraged Cubans to send messages about freedom to the email HavanaMedia@state.gov, with selected submissions to be published on July 4.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Trump marked his 80th birthday with a historic UFC mixed martial arts event on the White House's South Lawn, dubbed UFC Freedom 250, broadcasted on Paramount+ featuring stars like Ilia Topuria, Justin Gaethje, and Alex Pereira.

The embassy in Havana has been a vocal representative of the Trump administration's maximum pressure policy against the Cuban regime, imposing over 240 sanctions on the Cuban military conglomerate and other regime figures since January 2026.

In January, Hammer declared unequivocally that the release of all Cuban political prisoners is "non-negotiable" and must happen "without question," a stance the embassy has maintained even after retaliation against its diplomats on the island.
