In Havana, an enormous gathering of devoted followers took part in the funeral services on Saturday for Monsignor Silvano Herminio Pedroso Montalvo, the Bishop of the Diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa. He was notably the first Afro-Cuban bishop in over five centuries of Catholic Church history in Cuba. The Press Office of the Bishopric of Santa Clara described the event as a "massive day of prayer and gratitude for a shepherd who walked alongside his people."
The funeral rites were conducted at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish, located at the intersection of Paseo and 25th Street in Havana's Vedado district. Starting at 10:00 a.m., multiple funeral masses were held, drawing a steady stream of worshippers throughout the day to pay their respects to the late prelate.
The initial mass was led by Mons. Arturo González Amador, the Bishop of Santa Clara and President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba. In the afternoon, the Eucharist was presided over by Mons. Eloy Ricardo, Auxiliary Bishop of Havana, and was concelebrated by Cardinal Juan de la Caridad García—the highest authority in the Cuban Catholic Church—along with Bishops Antoine Camilleri, Matjas Router, Juan Gabriel Díaz Ruiz, and Arturo González Amador, as well as priests from both the Archdiocese of Havana and the Diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa.
After the mass concluded, the bishops escorted the casket to the main entrance of the church, from where the procession began its journey down 25th Street to the Colón Cemetery, Havana's primary burial ground.
Following a service in the cemetery's chapel, Mons. Silvano was laid to rest in the Bishops' Pantheon.
Pedroso Montalvo passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 73, following a battle with cancer diagnosed in February 2026 during the Cuban episcopate's ad limina visit to Rome.
He returned to Havana on June 3, where he remained under the care of the Daughters of Charity until his passing.
Born on April 25, 1953, in Cárdenas, Matanzas, Pedroso initially studied Geography at the University of Havana before entering the Major Seminary of San Carlos and San Ambrosio in 1987. He was ordained a priest on June 12, 1995, and appointed Bishop of Guantánamo-Baracoa by Pope Francis on March 29, 2018, officially taking over the diocese on June 9 of that year at the Cathedral of Saint Catherine of Ricci in Guantánamo.
Upon learning of his passing, CELAM highlighted his "discreet and close service" to the community.
The U.S. Embassy in Cuba extended its condolences, noting that Pedroso "dedicated his life to the service of God and the Cuban people," and offered "heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and all who mourn his loss."
