This Sunday marks a milestone birthday for former President Donald Trump as he celebrates turning 80 with an unprecedented event at the White House: a mixed martial arts (MMA) gala hosted by the UFC in the South Lawn.

Dubbed "UFC Freedom 250," in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America's independence, this event was initially announced by Trump last October during a speech at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia. He declared, "And on June 14 of the next year, we're going to have a great UFC fight at the White House, right on its grounds."

The octagon is set up beneath a 100-foot metal structure adorned with American flag lighting, accommodating over 4,000 guests, including at least 1,200 active-duty military personnel.

A Fan Zone has been established at The Ellipse, adjacent to the White House, featuring giant screens for up to 120,000 spectators, offering free entry with prior registration.

A First for the White House

The UFC Freedom 250 represents the first professional sports event ever held at the White House.

The evening's headliners feature two championship bouts: undefeated Hispanic-Georgian Ilia Topuria will face American Justin Gaethje in the main event, while Brazilian Alex Pereira takes on Frenchman Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title in the co-main event.

The full fight card also includes matchups such as Sean O'Malley against Aiemann Zahabi, Mauricio Ruffy versus Michael Chandler, Bo Nickal facing Kyle Daukaus, and Diego Lopes taking on Steve Garcia.

Political and Cultural Significance

Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the event as a gift to the American people, showcasing American culture to the world.

The White House previewed spectacular images of the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, just in time for the UFC Freedom 250 celebration.

The official video shared on X showcases hundreds gathered at the National Mall, the octagon lit in blue and red in front of the White House, and a dramatic double rainbow over the Washington Monument at sunset, with the reflecting pool as a backdrop.

The event will be exclusively broadcast on Paramount+ starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with sponsors including Crypto.com, Ram Trucks, and Monster Energy.

The UFC estimates total production costs at $60 million—three times the cost of the Las Vegas Sphere event—with projected losses of up to $30 million, aiming to recover only half through sponsorships.

Controversy and Legal Challenges

Trump's long-standing friendship with Dana White, UFC President, dates back decades. White welcomed Trump to his Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City in the early 2000s when MMA was considered a fringe sport. White also spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention as a staunch political ally of Trump.

The event has not been without controversy. A citizens' group filed a federal lawsuit to block the event, claiming the White House is being used for a commercial spectacle and pointing out a conflict of interest, as Trump allegedly purchased $50,000 worth of shares in TKO Group Holdings, the UFC's parent company. Federal Judge Amit Mehta denied the emergency injunction on Friday, allowing the event to proceed.

Trump also announced that the Department of War will debut its first television ad during the event, titled "Peace Through Strength," as a call for military recruitment.

Spokesperson Steven Cheung told The Wall Street Journal, "This will be one of the largest and most historic sporting events in history. The fact that President Trump is hosting it at the White House is a testament to his vision of celebrating America's monumental 250th anniversary."

Last year, Trump celebrated his 79th birthday with a military parade costing around $45 million, accompanied by massive protests under the slogan "No Kings."
