For the First Time, U.S. War Department to Advertise in UFC

Friday, June 12, 2026 by Sophia Martinez

On Friday, President Donald Trump revealed via his Truth Social account that the United States War Department will air its inaugural televised commercial during the landmark UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House, scheduled for Sunday evening.

The advertisement, titled "Peace Through Strength," will make its debut at the mixed martial arts event taking place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington D.C. This marks a historic occasion as it's the first professional MMA fight to occur on the presidential residence grounds.

Trump described the ad as a revival of the warrior spirit within the institution and a direct appeal to military recruitment. "The Warrior Ethos has RETURNED to the War Department, and we are calling the finest young Americans to join our Great Fighting Machine (when necessary!)," the president wrote.

The UFC Freedom 250 event is part of the White House's Freedom 250 initiative, celebrating the 250th anniversary of America's independence. The date, June 14, also coincides with Flag Day and Trump's 80th birthday.

A federal judge recently dismissed an emergency injunction request that aimed to halt the event, allowing it to proceed without legal barriers. The UFC must pay $700,000 to restore the White House lawn post-fight.

Promotional materials for the event feature fighters such as Ilia Topuria, Alex Pereira, Justin Gaethje, and Mauricio Ruffy. Paramount+ will broadcast the event live.

The War Department name was reinstated following an executive order signed by Trump on September 5, 2025, his second term's 200th order, permitting its use in secondary titles, documents, and official communications.

Originally known as the "Department of War," the institution was renamed the Department of Defense in 1947 following the National Security Act.

Secretary Pete Hegseth, whom Trump publicly refers to as the "Secretary of War," has been a leading advocate for the name change and the re-emphasis on military strength under the current administration. The official website, war.gov, is now operational.

The phrase "Peace Through Strength," historically linked to Ronald Reagan, has been embraced by Trump as a cornerstone of his foreign policy and defense doctrine, and it appears in the 2026 National Defense Strategy.

Trump shares a long-standing and close relationship with the UFC. Dana White, the organization's president and a political ally of Trump, spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention, and Trump frequently attends UFC events, where he receives enthusiastic applause in the octagon.
