If you're facing unpaid medical bills in Florida, you might one day find a letter in your mailbox stating that your debt has vanished, without you lifting a finger.

The nonprofit organization Undue Medical Debt recently revealed that it has wiped out over $725 million in medical debts for more than 623,000 residents in Florida.

Florida's Medical Debt Crisis

Florida ranks second in the United States for the number of residents burdened with medical debt. Approximately one in every twelve individuals in the state carries this financial weight, and the state has the sixth-highest rate of uninsured people nationwide.

Understanding the Debt Relief Program

The process is straightforward for those who benefit: there’s no action required on their part. Undue Medical Debt purchases portfolios of unpaid hospital debts directly from hospitals and collection agencies at a fraction of their nominal value, and then completely forgives these debts.

Camila Salvagno, a representative of the organization, explained, "Affected individuals will receive a letter in the mail. With this good news, there's no need to apply, fill out forms, or pay anything in return."

Moreover, the debt forgiveness does not create any tax liabilities, meaning beneficiaries aren't required to pay taxes on the canceled debt.

Eligibility Criteria for Debt Forgiveness

While you can't apply for relief, there are eligibility criteria. To qualify, a person must meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • Have an income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level, which is around $100,000 annually for a family of three.
  • Possess medical debt exceeding 5% of their annual income.

The selection process is random when the organization acquires a debt package, ensuring no favoritism.

Counties in Florida Benefiting the Most

According to the official statement by Undue Medical Debt, Broward leads the list with more than $90.2 million erased for nearly 61,000 people, followed by Polk ($61.6 million), Hillsborough ($60.9 million), and Miami-Dade with $32.9 million for about 17,200 individuals.

Orange County has also initiated its own program. In August 2024, its board of commissioners approved a $4.5 million contract with Undue Medical Debt, using federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to aid approximately 400,000 residents.

Expanding Beyond Florida

This model isn't limited to Florida; it operates in several other states. In Connecticut, the organization erased $6.5 million in debt for 97,000 residents during a fourth round coordinated with the state. In Arizona, 352,000 residents received similar debt relief.

Since its inception in 2014, Undue Medical Debt has eliminated over $14 billion in medical debts nationwide, assisting more than nine million people. The organization estimates that for every dollar donated, it can erase approximately $100 in debt, transforming each contribution into tangible relief for families who, according to Gallup, borrowed around $74 billion in 2024 just to cover medical bills.
