Donald Trump declared on Thursday that the United States would launch a substantial military strike against Iran "very hard tonight," raising tensions in the Middle East to unprecedented levels since the conflict began. He also threatened to seize control of Jark Island, a critical oil export hub, escalating the situation further.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, "The United States will hit Iran (whose Navy, Air Force, radars, air defenses, and most of their offensive capabilities have VANISHED!) VERY HARD TONIGHT."

He added, "In the not-too-distant future, we will take over Jark Island and other oil infrastructure points, assuming full control of their oil and gas markets, similar to our actions in Venezuela, which have been excellent for both Venezuela and the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP."

Military Escalation Continues for a Second Day

This announcement follows another day of escalating military actions between Washington and Tehran. The United States conducted a fresh wave of bombings on Wednesday, prompting Iranian forces to retaliate with attacks on American bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Increased Bombardment Planned

During a later interview with Fox News, Trump confirmed that the night's attacks would involve even larger and more powerful bombs. "Yes, there will be more bombings tonight," he said, emphasizing the increased scale of the operation.

However, Trump acknowledged the potential complications of a ground operation necessary to seize the island. "I don't know if Americans have the stomach for that. I think they prefer to see us come back home," he admitted.

He also hinted at a possible diplomatic resolution, stating, "Iran is desperate to make a deal."

Why is Jark Island So Significant?

Jark Island, located in the Persian Gulf, handles approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, totaling around 1.6 million barrels daily. The Pentagon has been planning its capture for months but has repeatedly shelved these plans due to the high risks involved, which include the need for ground troops and the potential for significant casualties, according to a senior Pentagon official and two administration sources cited by CNN.

Iran has bolstered the island's defenses, deploying portable missile systems and placing anti-personnel and anti-tank mines along the coast where U.S. forces might land.

Ongoing Regional Tensions

On Wednesday, the U.S. Central Command conducted a second series of airstrikes against Iranian targets in retaliation for the downing of an Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. In response, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard attacked 18 targets at U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain and launched drones against the U.S. Fifth Fleet.

The Jordanian military intercepted and destroyed 20 Iranian missiles aimed at the American base in Azraq, while an attack on the tanker M/T Settebello off the coast of Oman resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors.

Diplomatic Efforts on the Brink of Collapse

The Iranian foreign ministry declared the ceasefire, in effect since April 8, "practically meaningless" following the latest attacks, denouncing them as "illegal and criminal" and a blatant "violation of the United Nations Charter."

Iran also announced the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for over 20% of the world's oil, although the U.S. denied this, asserting that commercial vessels continued to navigate the strait.

A Qatari delegation mediating between the parties left Tehran after negotiations stretched into the early hours of Thursday amidst U.S. bombings on Iran.

The commander of the Revolutionary Guard's Aerospace Force, Majid Mousavi, issued a stark warning: "Do you think you can make the sacred Strait of Hormuz unsafe? We will turn the entire region into a living hell for you."

Understanding the Strategic Importance of Jark Island

Why is Jark Island a strategic target for the U.S.?

Jark Island handles a significant portion of Iran's crude oil exports, making it a crucial asset in Iran's economy. Its capture could severely disrupt Iran's oil revenue and cripple its economic capabilities.

What are the risks involved in capturing Jark Island?

Seizing Jark Island would require ground troops, posing high risks including potential casualties and escalating military conflict. Iran has fortified the island with missile systems and mines, complicating any military operations.

How has Iran prepared for potential attacks on Jark Island?

Iran has reinforced the island's defenses by deploying portable missile systems and installing anti-personnel and anti-tank mines to thwart any invasion attempts, particularly from U.S. forces.
