On Wednesday, President Donald Trump issued an official statement from the White House, marking the 124th anniversary of Cuba's Independence Day. He described the Castro regime as a "direct betrayal of the nation for which its founding patriots bled and died."

In the statement, Trump drew a comparison between Cuba's independence on May 20, 1902, and the 250th anniversary of American independence celebrated this year. He emphasized the Cuban people's values of freedom, hard work, and faith in God, contrasting them with nearly seven decades of communist rule.

"For almost seven decades, the island's communist government has violently dismantled political freedom, denied its people fair elections, cruelly silenced dissent, and strangled the Cuban economy to the point of collapse," the president articulated.

Trump accused the regime's leadership of being a "kleptocratic elite" hoarding the island's resources to sustain their "lavish lifestyle" while the populace suffers.

Military Leaders Under Scrutiny

The message also directly targeted military commanders: "Cuban military leaders have shown no interest in ensuring the prosperity of the Cuban people, focusing solely on maintaining control and the regime's raison d'être: violently exporting communism and despotism abroad."

In his address, Trump reviewed his administration's actions against the regime and its regional allies.

He highlighted the capture and extradition of Nicolás Maduro in January 2026 as "one of the most daring and impressive special operations in generations," warning that this operation sent a clear message to Havana.

"This is our hemisphere, and those who destabilize it and threaten the United States will face consequences," Trump declared.

He claimed to have imposed "new and powerful sanctions" against Cuba's military and intelligence apparatus and those providing them material and financial support.

Continued Pressure on Cuba

This statement is part of a systematic policy of maximum pressure that the Trump administration has maintained against Cuba since the start of his second term.

On the same day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the Cuban people in a video offering a "new relationship" between the United States and Cuba. He also reiterated a $100 million humanitarian aid package in food and medicine, contingent upon its distribution by trusted entities, not the Cuban State.

Trump concluded his message with a direct promise to the Cuban people and millions of Cuban Americans: "We will not rest until the people of Cuba regain the freedom for which their ancestors bravely fought over 100 years ago."
