Authorities in Miami-Dade County have arrested a Cuban woman for allegedly orchestrating multiple package thefts at an apartment complex in the Dadeland area, along with fraudulent use of a stolen credit card. This arrest comes as two other individuals face similar charges.
Ariadnis Mejías, a 37-year-old Miami resident, voluntarily surrendered at the Kendall District police station. She is charged with three counts of burglary, one count of fraudulent credit card use exceeding $100, and three counts of petty theft, according to the arrest report.
At the time of her surrender, Mejías had seven outstanding arrest warrants for serious theft-related offenses while she was out on bail, highlighting a concerning pattern of repeat offenses.
Pattern of Thefts and Fraudulent Activity
The investigation began after a resident of the Motion at Dadeland building, located at 8400 S. Dixie Highway, reported a stolen replacement bank card on March 31. The card had been delivered to the building's secured package room.
The thefts occurred in March on three different occasions. On March 18, Mejías and a co-defendant, identified as Luis Sánchez Blen, accessed the package room using a code from delivery service Luxor One, stealing between six and eight packages, including a green bag from the premises.
On March 22, Mejías returned alone, using the same code to take three additional packages. On March 31, Mejías and another female accomplice, yet to be identified, followed a resident into the building. Surveillance footage captured Mejías concealing packages beneath her shirt and waistband before leaving the room.
Further Evidence and Legal Proceedings
The stolen items included a replacement bank card, whose delivery had been confirmed hours earlier. That same night, the victim received alerts of fraudulent purchases made with the card.
The building manager confirmed that none of the individuals captured on surveillance were residents. On May 12, detectives obtained Macy's store footage showing Mejías and another woman using the stolen credit card for $444.05 worth of purchases.
The investigation was launched on April 20, and Mejías' identity was confirmed on April 29 with assistance from a Doral city detective, indicating her criminal activities spanned beyond Dadeland.
Mejías' lawyer contacted investigators on May 4, indicating her intent to surrender and exercise her right to legal representation. Following her arrest, she was taken to Miami's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK).
The arrest report notes that Luis Sánchez Blen, 48, was apprehended on May 7 as a co-defendant in the March 18 theft.
A Series of Similar Arrests
This case is part of a broader pattern of package thefts in Miami-Dade involving Cuban nationals. These incidents include an April arrest of a couple for thefts in a luxury condominium in Edgewater and a January arrest of a young woman for similar crimes in Hialeah.
Additionally, in April, a Cuban couple from Hialeah was arrested for stealing checks worth approximately $47,000 from mailboxes in central-eastern Florida neighborhoods.
