Marcelo H. Corvalán, a truck driver originally from Cuba and residing in Miami, was discovered alive in a hospital on Tuesday after being missing for over 48 hours while on a delivery route near Orlando.
Friends and family had reported his disappearance after he stopped communicating, as noted by Univision journalist Javier Díaz on Facebook.
After numerous calls to the police, they finally located him, but he was found in a medical facility, not in his truck.
Corvalán's truck was found abandoned. "The load was for Amazon, but he never got to deliver it," the post detailed.
The driver himself does not recall the events during his disappearance, leaving the investigation into the incident's circumstances ongoing.
"It's unclear if he experienced a medical issue or if it was a potential assault," the journalist mentioned in his post.
Community Concerns Rise Amidst Growing Threats
The incident has reignited concerns among the Cuban trucker community in South Florida, who have been increasingly worried about safety on highways and rest areas.
The most severe case involved Alejandro Jacomino González, a 41-year-old Cuban truck driver from Port St. Lucie, Florida. He vanished on April 17 while transporting luxury vehicles from the port of Brunswick, Georgia, to Miami.
His body was found lifeless on April 29 in a coastal area of Georgia, with the FBI investigating it as a potential kidnapping involving cargo theft, according to local Florida media reports.
This case has highlighted the vulnerability of Cuban drivers in U.S. highway rest areas, where, according to the Department of Transportation, there is only one safe parking spot for every 11 trucks.
Furthermore, 75% of cargo thefts in the country occur in unsecured parking areas, as reported by the same institution.
Calls for Increased Security Measures
Fernando Espinosa from America Auto Transport described the lack of security in these areas: "In our places, you can look around and see there are no cameras, no security guards patrolling, no protection at all."
The family of the deceased trucker Jacomino González had publicly demanded justice following the news of his death.
As for Corvalán, authorities have yet to determine if the driver suffered a medical emergency or fell victim to an assault, and the investigation remains open.
