On Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued 10 individuals aboard a plane that plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, about 80 miles east of Melbourne, Florida, as reported by the institution's Southeast District.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:05 p.m. EST when the aircraft, a Beechcraft BE30 with tail number HP-1859, lost contact with air traffic control after declaring an in-flight emergency.

The flight had taken off from Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, Abaco (Bahamas), heading for Grand Bahama International Airport, traversing the Atlantic waters between the Bahamas and Florida's eastern seaboard.

The Coast Guard dispatched a C-27 transport aircraft to conduct search and rescue operations in the area, which is also situated about 50 miles east of Vero Beach Regional Airport.

Survivors Found and Transported to Safety

All passengers were found alive and were transported to emergency medical services for evaluation, as confirmed by the Coast Guard in an official statement.

Among the ten survivors, three sustained injuries. Nine were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Brevard County, while one was transported to Orlando Health Melbourne. They initially arrived at Melbourne-Orlando International Airport before being moved to the hospitals.

Weather Conditions and Ongoing Investigation

The identities and specific medical conditions of the passengers have not been disclosed publicly.

The weather at the crash site featured winds of 17 mph and an 80% chance of showers and storms, according to the National Weather Service.

The cause of the crash remains unknown and is under investigation by both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA).

Coast Guard's History in the Region

The Coast Guard has a history of responding to similar incidents in the area. In October 2024, the agency rescued four people and a dog after a small plane crashed in Florida Bay. In November 2023, a man survived a plane crash near the Florida Keys and was rescued by the same institution.

The air route between the Bahamas and Florida is heavily frequented by private and charter flights, making the Coast Guard's Southeast District one of the most active in aerial search and rescue operations in the western Atlantic.

The FAA is expected to release a preliminary report on the crash by Wednesday.
