Cuban singer Aymée Nuviola, a two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, has emphatically stated that Raúl Castro will not relinquish power willingly, suggesting that a direct intervention is the only viable solution for Cuba. "In my opinion, the only way is to go in and force him out," she declared.
In an interview with journalist Tania Costa, Nuviola explored potential scenarios for ending the Cuban regime, dismissing the idea that the current leaders would choose to relocate to Russia.
"The solution I see is that you have to go in there. I'm not advocating for a war or harming innocent Cubans," she clarified, emphasizing the extent of her proposal.
Nuviola argued that the regime's military strength is more illusion than reality. "All they have are basically slingshots. When the plane lands, those with the slingshots will just drop them and say 'Welcome to Cuba,'" she stated.
Regarding the possibility of Castro voluntarily going into exile, the singer was adamant. "I don't see these people, these bloodthirsty dictators, deciding to leave. They won't do it," she insisted.
Nuviola described the regime as a sectarian structure with a central figure holding all the power. "This is the dragon's head. Cutting off that head is challenging because that's where everything originates, even spiritually," she explained.
Addressing Raúl Castro's age and condition, now 94, Nuviola remarked, "That man lives like a king where he is, in the mountains of Oriente. No, he won't go anywhere. Forget about it; he has to be removed."
The former Cuban leader made a public appearance at the May Day event in Havana, his first in five months, where he was noted to look visibly frail.
Nuviola outlined two possible scenarios for change in Cuba: a direct intervention to remove the regime or economic pressure so severe that it sparks an internal uprising.
"The American government is betting on such intense strangulation that it could lead to an explosion where even the people themselves say, 'We can't take it anymore,'" she explained.
However, the singer expressed skepticism about the second possibility, highlighting the regime's inhumanity. "They're so evil that they wouldn't care if everyone inside dies," she said, doubting they'd negotiate.
In December 2024, Nuviola joined protests against the deaths of political prisoners in the regime's jails and compared communism to Nazism, labeling both systems as "diabolical and satanic."
In the broader context of the interview, Nuviola was hopeful about the regime's end, crediting the Trump Administration and figures like Marco Rubio, but she voiced a significant concern. "What worries me most is our preparedness for that moment. That truly concerns me," she noted.
"I see us fragmented, with everyone more focused on exposing others' dirty laundry than on highlighting the positive contributions that could facilitate a transition or change," Nuviola concluded.
