Cuban baseball player Yasiel Puig made a dazzling entrance into the Canadian Baseball League, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs during the 2026 season's Opening Day. His performance led the Toronto Maple Leafs to an 8-6 victory over the Kitchener Panthers.

According to Pelota Cubana, the 35-year-old from Cienfuegos had a flawless debut in Canada, going 2-for-2 with two homers, three runs scored, and two walks, finishing the day with a perfect 1.000 batting average.

Batting third and playing right field at Toronto's Christie Pits Stadium, Puig demonstrated that even at 35, he retains the power and batting discipline that once made him a standout in Major League Baseball.

In April 2026, the Maple Leafs signed him to what they called "the largest contract in team history," making him a marquee player in the league's inaugural season as a fully professional circuit.

The Canadian Baseball League celebrates its 108th season in 2026, having transitioned from a semi-professional to a fully professional league in November 2025.

Other Cuban Players Shine on Opening Day

Alongside Puig, other Cuban players also excelled in the Opening Day match: Yordan Manduley hit 1-for-4 with a double and two walks; Yadián Martínez secured the win as a pitcher after five innings of work; and Yosvani Peñalver went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Puig had already participated in preseason games with the Maple Leafs during the weekend of May 4th, prior to his official debut.

Legal Troubles Loom Over Puig's Career

Off the field, the former Los Angeles Dodgers player is embroiled in a complex legal situation in the United States. On February 6th, a federal jury in Los Angeles found him guilty of obstructing justice and lying to federal investigators during a probe into an illegal gambling ring.

The prosecution claims that Puig placed approximately 899 bets in 2019 on football, basketball, and tennis, incurring losses exceeding $1.5 million and a documented debt of $282,900.

Puig denied to federal investigators that he was involved in these bets and also denied it during his U.S. naturalization process in 2019.

His sentencing hearing is set for May 26th in Los Angeles, where he faces a theoretical maximum sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison, casting a shadow of uncertainty over his tenure in Canada.

In MLB, Puig accumulated a .277 average, 132 home runs, and 415 RBIs over seven seasons between 2013 and 2019, before playing in leagues in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, South Korea, and Venezuela. His most notable recent performance was in the 2023-24 season with the La Guaira Sharks, where he achieved a .418 average with 10 home runs in just 25 games.
