Reunion in Cuba Brings Tears on Mother's Day: "Grateful God Watched Over Them"

Monday, May 11, 2026 by Oscar Fernandez

A Cuban émigré made an emotional return to the island, embracing her family for the first time in three years, capturing the heartfelt reunion in a video shared on TikTok this past Sunday, Mother's Day.

User DayiAshley (@dayanisashley97) documented the poignant moment from inside a car upon arriving in Cuba, with a person and a small child visible through the windshield near a house with a blue door. The text overlaid on the video encapsulated the weight of their separation: "3 years sound easy."

"We needed these hugs after 3 years. Grateful God watched over them," she wrote in the video's description.

Heartfelt Reunions Resonate on Social Media

DayiAshley’s reunion adds to a wave of similar videos that have circulated in the days leading up to Mother's Day. Just last Wednesday, a Cuban doctor who had emigrated to Uruguay returned to the island unexpectedly after nearly three years, exclaiming "Mom!" upon entering his home. His video garnered over 407,000 views.

On that same Sunday, another Cuban reunited with his family at the airport, leaving his father in "shock for 30 minutes" unable to speak.

Weeks earlier, Zulien Martinez was reunited with her daughter Carla after four years of separation in another clip that touched thousands of Cubans living abroad.

The Larger Picture: Cuban Emigration and its Effects

These videos highlight a reality that extends beyond social media. Over 1.4 million Cubans emigrated from 2020 to 2024, driven by economic hardship, persistent power outages, food and medicine shortages, and political repression under the regime.

During this period, the island's effective population dwindled from 11.3 million to between 8.6 and 8.8 million inhabitants.

By 2023, 38% of Cuban families had at least one member living abroad, according to data from the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

Mother's Day thus arrives laden with special meaning for thousands of fragmented families, where Cuban mothers support their families from afar through remittances and video calls, longing for the moment when a physical reunion becomes possible.

Surprise Reunions: A TikTok Phenomenon

Since 2025, surprise reunions have become a recurring theme on TikTok, particularly around emotional dates. In March, a young girl burst into tears upon seeing her mom unexpectedly at school, and a Cuban woman surprised her daughter a day before her birthday in a video that amassed 250,000 views.

Each of these clips captures the collective pain of a separation that, as DayiAshley wrote, "sounds easy" but bears a significant emotional weight for those who experience it.

Understanding Cuban Family Reunions

Why are family reunions so important for Cuban emigrants?

Family reunions are vital for Cuban emigrants because many have been separated from their loved ones for extended periods due to economic and political challenges. These reunions offer emotional relief and a sense of connection after years of longing.

How has emigration affected Cuba's population?

Emigration has significantly reduced Cuba's population, with the number of inhabitants dropping from 11.3 million to between 8.6 and 8.8 million due to people leaving the country in search of better opportunities and escaping political repression.
