Friday, May 8, 2026 by Alexander Flores

Óscar Portuondo, known in the music world as Bolito El Efi, tragically lost his life in a traffic accident in Havana. This sorrowful news quickly spread across social media, deeply affecting members of the Cuban urban music scene.

One of the first to share the sad news was the Facebook page Rancho Destino, posting: "Passed away in Havana, Cuba. Bolito El Efi, as he was known in Cuban entertainment, RIP."

Having lived in the United States for a significant period, Bolito El Efi had only recently returned to Cuba. He shared this return in a video on his Instagram account just weeks before his untimely death.

A prominent figure in Cuban entertainment, Bolito was synonymous with the luxurious urban style that many genre leaders both on the island and in the diaspora embody.

Community Grieves Together Online

Within hours of the news, artists and well-known figures in the urban genre transformed digital platforms into a communal mourning space. Among the first to express grief was rapper Ja Rulay, who wrote on Instagram, "Brother, I can't believe this. Rest, Bolito, rest."

One of the most heartbroken was Yandi Barnada. He shared that just a day before Bolito's passing, they were planning his trip to Cuba for a reunion: "The last hug we shared was a blessing. We were just arranging everything for my arrival. I'm truly not ready for this."

Payaso Por Ley penned a heartfelt farewell: "My friend, it pains me not to have had the chance to say goodbye. I will miss you dearly, more than words can express. Thank you for all the moments, your friendship, and everything we shared. You'll always have a special place in my life and heart."

El Yonki posted a tribute video, offering condolences: "My sympathies to his family and loved ones, rest in peace, you will be remembered with respect and fondness."

Other Cuban reggaeton artists, including Yomil, Oniel Bebeshito, and many more, took to social media to bid farewell to the cherished artist.

A String of Tragic Losses

The death of Bolito El Efi marks the third significant loss for the Cuban urban music movement in less than six years. In July 2020, El Dany, a member of the iconic duo Yomil and El Dany, passed away at 31 due to a cardiovascular event at Havana's Calixto García Hospital, under circumstances Yomil claimed were due to medical negligence.

In October 2024, El Taiger was fatally shot in Miami and died on October 10 of that year at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the age of 37.

Now, Bolito El Efi's sudden departure once again shakes an artistic community already reeling from the loss of three beloved figures in just five years.
