A 76-year-old woman was taken into custody by Miami police on Tuesday for allegedly pawning jewelry valued at approximately $5,000 that was entrusted to her by an 87-year-old friend during a hospital stay, authorities announced.

Zonia Beatriz Reategui, a resident of North Miami Beach, is facing charges that include third-degree grand theft, trafficking in stolen property, and violations of second-hand goods sales laws for failing to verify ownership of items valued over $300, according to media reports.

Her elderly friend, unable to drive, relied on Reategui, a companion of nearly 20 years, for transportation to medical appointments.

The Hospital Visit and Betrayal

On December 9, 2025, Reategui accompanied the elderly woman to a hospital for treatment of a foot condition. Before her friend was admitted, Reategui offered to hold onto her bracelets to prevent them from getting lost during the hospital stay, to which the elderly woman agreed.

After being discharged, the elderly woman asked for her jewelry back, but Reategui began offering a string of excuses. Initially, she claimed she was traveling to Peru and would return them later. Over the following weeks, she continued with various pretexts before finally telling her friend that the jewelry had been "stolen" from her home.

Investigation and Arrest

Investigators discovered through pawn shop records that the bracelets matching the elderly woman's had been pawned on December 9 and 20, 2025, for $500 each. The jewelry was identified via photographs and their unique charm configurations and were taken into custody.

In a recorded police interview, Reategui confessed to pawning the jewelry and admitted she never retrieved them.

Reategui appeared in court on Wednesday and remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting bail determination at the time of this report.

A Larger Pattern of Elder Exploitation

This incident is far from unique in South Florida, where scams targeting the elderly and disabled individuals are prevalent. Just last week, a mother and son were charged in Miami for exploiting an elderly woman. In December, police arrested a fake contractor in Hialeah accused of scamming an 85-year-old woman, and a former Bank of America employee in Miami-Dade was charged with stealing over half a million dollars from a disabled woman.

National statistics reveal that 90% of financial abuse cases against the elderly involve family members or trusted individuals, rather than strangers.

In 2023, financial exploitation losses reported by victims over 60 years old exceeded $3.4 billion across the United States, according to FBI data cited by the Florida Senate.
