Famed Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of his dear friend and collaborator, Jorge Calandrelli, an accomplished Argentine composer, arranger, and pianist. Calandrelli passed away this past Monday at the age of 86, leaving a significant void in the global music scene.

Sandoval shared a heartfelt tribute on his Facebook page, reflecting on their decades-long friendship: "With a heavy heart, I received the news of my beloved friend Jorge Calandrelli's departure. We've lost an extraordinary musician and a person of immense quality."

Having been awarded the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, Sandoval spoke of Calandrelli with deep admiration: "Jorge was a true master—a phenomenal arranger, exquisite composer, refined pianist, producer, conductor... a complete artist, a true music polymath."

The Unique Touch of Calandrelli's Arrangements

Sandoval highlighted the distinctiveness of Calandrelli's arrangements: "His arrangements had a unique touch: a perfect blend of sophistication, emotion, and unwavering respect for the melody. Jorge knew how to dress a song with grandeur without stripping it of its soul. That's not something you can teach... that's a gift."

Memorable Collaborations

Their artistic partnership resulted in several significant projects. Among the most notable was the album "A Time for Love" (2010), which earned Sandoval the Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album and won Calandrelli the Producer of the Year award.

Another landmark project was "Eternamente Manzanero" (2014), a tribute to Mexican composer Armando Manzanero. Sandoval reminisced about the experience: "The most beautiful thing was that Armando himself joined the project upon learning about our tribute. It was a gathering of talent, respect, and love for music that I'll never forget."

Calandrelli's Illustrious Career

Born on December 31, 1939, in Buenos Aires, Calandrelli moved to the United States in 1978, aspiring to work with America's musical greats. His collaborations included iconic figures like Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Quincy Jones, Yo-Yo Ma, Madonna, Plácido Domingo, and Shakira, among many others.

His partnership with Tony Bennett was notably fruitful, contributing to 14 of Bennett's albums, including the celebrated "Cheek to Cheek" with Lady Gaga. Bennett himself praised him: "Jorge Calandrelli is a master of arrangements, and it's been a pleasure to work with him on so many recordings throughout my career."

Throughout his career, Calandrelli garnered six Grammy Awards and 29 nominations, in addition to two Oscar nominations for Steven Spielberg's "The Color Purple" and the song "A Love Before Time" from Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Sandoval concluded his tribute with a sentiment that encapsulates his grief: "Music has lost a legend, but his legacy will live on in every note he wrote, in every arrangement he elevated, and in every emotion he conveyed. I will miss you deeply."
