Cuban Woman's Garage Home Becomes Viral Sensation: "It's My Castle"

A Cuban woman residing in the United States has captured the attention of TikTok users by revealing her living space: a garage repurposed within her daughter's home, which she affectionately refers to as her "little garage house," "castle," "sanctuary," and "temple." The video, shared by user @margelysgriego, has amassed 239,000 views, 18,100 likes, and over two thousand comments.

In a brief two-minute tour, the woman showcases her space with a blend of humility, gratitude, and pride, resonating deeply with many Cuban and Latino immigrants.

"This used to be a garage, now it's my little garage house, it's my castle, it's my sanctuary, it's my temple. With all the humility in the world, I'm showing it to you and giving you the idea if you want to create your own garage home," she states in the video.

The space includes a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. At the time of filming, renovations were ongoing: the living room and kitchen had been painted, with the bedroom and bathroom still pending. She mentions they've been living this way for nearly four years: "It'll be four years in November since we did this."

The tone of the video is neither one of complaint nor lamentation. Instead, it reflects someone who has found her place in the world and wishes to share it as inspiration for others in similar circumstances.

One of the most touching moments occurred not in the video itself but in the comments section. Heydi Puch, identifying herself as the protagonist's daughter, wrote: "I am the daughter, I always dreamed of giving my mom a little of what she has given me all her life. This is little compared to what she deserves."

The mother's reply was equally heartfelt: "I love you, my beautiful girl, to the moon and back."

This isn't the first instance of a video like this going viral. In October 2024, a Latina transformed her garage into a home in Lawrence, Massachusetts, with the tour reaching nearly a million views on TikTok, with a monthly rent of $1,400.

@margelysgriego's case adds an especially emotional layer: she is not an anonymous tenant but a mother living in the home her daughter built for her as an act of love. Other Cuban women have shared similar stories, like one in South Carolina proudly showing off her new home, or another who left Spain after six years to start anew.

Cuban emigration to the United States continues to generate complex family dynamics, marked by separations, reunifications, and living arrangements documented on social media as a way to process and share their experiences.
