New Home Given to Mother and Daughter in Holguín by Generous Cubans

Tuesday, May 5, 2026 by Edward Lopez

Griselda Tarrago Escobar, 49, and her young charge, Natacha Montenegro Tarrago, age six, have been gifted a new home in El Llano, San Andrés, Holguín. This generous act was the result of a citizen-led solidarity campaign that gained momentum on social media, culminating in the home delivery documented by content creator Héctor Lorenzo.

The situation first came to light in mid-April when the humanitarian project group on Facebook called "Mi Ciudad tiene un Principito" responded to an urgent call for help. Initial videos revealed the dire state of their living conditions, including a broken roof, no stable electricity, and a makeshift wood-burning stove.

"This is my stove. I cook with wood, and I personally have to gather it with my girl because there’s hardly any electricity in this country," Griselda explained at the start of the solidarity campaign.

Though not Natacha's biological mother, Griselda has been raising her from birth. Natacha's biological mother, only 23, suffers from severe ataxia with brain damage, preventing her from caring for her daughter.

Community Efforts to Aid a Family in Need

Natacha, who suffers from bronchial asthma and hematological disorders causing anemia, had gone nearly seven months without medication prior to the campaign's initiation. "I've raised her with almost no food, thanks to my wonderful neighbors," Griselda shared in early videos that moved thousands of people.

The campaign, spearheaded by Héctor Lorenzo, who is active on TikTok and Facebook under "Soy Holguín," saw a significant rise in community involvement and donations. Initially, Ana Ponce donated 5,000 Cuban pesos, followed by contributions of medicine, a new bed, shoes, and toys for Natacha.

From Dire Straits to a New Beginning

On April 24, following reports of Griselda cooking in the rain while Natacha was ill, a wave of donations included household appliances like an infrared stove, refrigerator, multipurpose pot, rice cooker, pressure cooker, and fan. Altogether, the campaign raised an impressive 234,000 Cuban pesos.

The campaign reached its peak with the handover of a brand-new house, where Griselda, visibly moved, showed the cameras around. "I love it. Now I'll show you my kitchen with my appliances. I won't have to use that wood stove anymore; it's something beautiful," she exclaimed.

Griselda expressed heartfelt gratitude to Héctor Lorenzo's community of followers: "I thank everyone who contributed from the bottom of my heart. To Héctor Lorenzo from the Soy Holguín page and his TikTok with so many kind-hearted people, may God bless you all."

Citizen Initiatives: A Critical Response to Government Shortcomings

This story is part of a growing trend in Holguín, where organized citizen groups on social networks fill the void left by the government's inadequacies in addressing severe vulnerability. Around the same time, influencer Melissa's group gifted a home to abandoned elderly individuals on April 27 and handed over another house on May 3. In Holguín, locals raised over a million pesos for a couple in dire straits.

Cuba faces a housing deficit exceeding 900,000 units by 2026. The government managed to fulfill only 22% of its construction plan in 2025—2,382 out of 10,795 planned homes—due to shortages of cement, steel, and wood, making these grassroots initiatives the only viable solution for many families.

"Now I'm in my little house and I'm very happy, thanks to you," Griselda concluded in a video that has garnered over 142,000 views.
