Karel Díaz González, a Cuban resident of Hialeah, was taken into custody this past Sunday after allegedly stabbing a man with a kitchen knife in what authorities have labeled an unprovoked attack.
The 46-year-old Díaz González is now facing charges of second-degree attempted murder using a deadly weapon, according to the arrest report.
The violent incident unfolded around 8:18 p.m. on the 767 block of West 2nd Avenue. Officers from the Hialeah Police Department arrived at the scene following a report of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered the victim sitting on the ground. Family members were applying pressure to multiple stab wounds on the back of his head and body in an effort to stop the bleeding.
The police report indicates that the victim, identified by media as Osvaldo Fuentes, informed investigators he did not know his assailant and was unaware of any motive behind the attack. "I don't know why this happened... I don't know him," he stated.
The injured man was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries and required surgery for a wound to the lower part of his neck.
Investigators followed a trail of blood from the scene to a knife sheath found in the front yard of a nearby residence. This path eventually led them to Díaz González's apartment at 128 West 7th Street, where blood was found on the entrance and door handle.
When officers opened the door, the suspect had visible blood on his ear and, according to the report, "spontaneously claimed he was attacked first."
However, surveillance footage from the area contradicts his account. The video shows Díaz González speaking with the victim under an awning before entering his apartment. He later emerges with a large kitchen knife in an "attack position" and charges at the man, who attempted to flee.
The knife was later recovered beneath a nearby parked vehicle.
After being read his rights, Díaz González refused to provide a statement.
The suspect appeared before a judge on Monday, who assigned him a public defender and ordered him held without bail, citing the seriousness of the charge and the threat he poses to the community as factors in the ongoing legal proceedings.
In another disturbing incident recently reported in Miami, Cuban boxer Frank Zaldívar Santiesteban, 29, was arrested for a knife attack that left another man severely injured.
Additionally, earlier this year in January, another Cuban individual was detained in northwest Miami-Dade for a brutal knife assault on his brother-in-law, a violent act that alarmed the community and posed a life-threatening risk to the victim. In July, a homeless man in Hialeah was taken into custody by police for stabbing another individual.
