The Diocese of Cienfuegos announced on Saturday that Monsignor Juan Francisco Vega Rodríguez, affectionately known as Father Vega, suffered a fall in his room resulting in an intracapsular fracture of his right hip.

According to the official statement signed by Bishop Monsignor Domingo Oropesa Lorente, the priest is currently at home under medical supervision. He is scheduled to return to the hospital in a week for further evaluation and treatment.

The diocesan report specified that the incident occurred "on Saturday morning in his room," without providing additional details regarding the circumstances of the fall.

Father Vega serves as the Vicar General of the Diocese of Cienfuegos, a position he has held since June 1967 when he began as a vicar at the Cathedral of Cienfuegos, marking over five decades of service in the province.

This incident comes merely two weeks after Father Yuniel Alfonso Quintero, known as Father Lolo, fell from a church roof in Cienfuegos on April 21, suffering fractures to his hip and skull.

Father Lolo was urgently admitted to the intensive care unit at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General University Hospital, where he underwent a successful surgical procedure on April 24.

In the following days, his prognosis was deemed hopeful: he remained stable, had regained nearly full memory, and was able to communicate clearly.

On April 26, Father Lolo was discharged from the hospital after showing favorable progress, although visitor restrictions were imposed per medical advice.

The official diocesan note concerning Father Vega's accident also referenced Father Lolo, stating that he "continues to make strides in his recovery process."

In less than a fortnight, the Diocese of Cienfuegos has been compelled to issue two official statements regarding priestly accidents, during a period also marked by the death of the emeritus bishop Jorge Enrique Serpa Pérez on April 17 in Havana at the age of 84.

The chronic lack of maintenance leading to structural deterioration of Cuban churches is a well-documented risk on the island. However, the exact reasons for Father Lolo’s fall from the roof were never officially disclosed.

Bishop Oropesa Lorente concluded the statement with an appeal to the faithful community: "We ask the entire people of God to offer prayers for his swift recovery," and requested the intercession of "Our Loving Mother Mary" to grant them "a quick and full recovery."
