Sunday, May 3, 2026 by Charlotte Gomez

A young motorcyclist sustained injuries on Saturday after losing control of his bike on the avenue between Cuartel and San Gregorio in Guantánamo. This incident was reported by a Facebook user who shared a video of the crash.

The rider was traveling from east to west when he collided with the curb of the road dividers, resulting in visible injuries. Eyewitnesses stated that the young man was speeding at the time of the accident.

Emergency Medical Services and the Police promptly arrived at the scene, providing initial medical assistance before transporting him to the Provincial Hospital of Guantánamo. His condition has been described as critical.

This accident adds to a series of traffic incidents that have plagued the province in recent months. In September 2025, a 22-year-old died when a bus collided with an electric scooter in the same province. That same month, eight people, including a minor, were injured in another accident in Guantánamo city.

In November 2025, two motorcyclists were injured in a crash in Yateras, one of them critically. Additionally, in February 2025, a motorcyclist fatally struck an elderly man at the intersection of Ahogados and Crombet, also in Guantánamo.

This troubling trend is prevalent throughout Cuba. According to the National Road Safety Commission, traffic accidents resulted in 750 fatalities in Cuba during 2025, compared to 634 deaths in 2024, with a total of 7,538 accidents and 6,718 injuries reported that year.

Motorcycles and scooters were involved in 63% of these accidents, with human factors such as speeding, distracted driving, and disobeying traffic signals accounting for 72% of the incidents.

Exacerbating the situation, official figures reveal that 31% of drivers involved in accidents in 2025 did not possess a driving license. The increasing reliance on motorcycles as a primary mode of transportation due to fuel shortages and inadequate public transport has heightened the risk on Cuba's poorly maintained and sparsely marked roads.
