Last Thursday, an elderly woman was successfully rescued after her car plunged into a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida. The operation was a race against time, as the vehicle was nearly submerged within seconds.
According to Local 10's report, the incident took place around 10:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of Southwest Palm Aire Drive, adjacent to a shopping plaza in the Palm Aire area.
The apparent cause was an accidental acceleration by the driver, causing the car to break through a fence and descend into the canal.

The rescue was carried out by two deputies from the Broward County Sheriff's Department and off-duty Captain Kevin Costa from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. Costa, who has 14 years of diving experience with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, heard the emergency call over the radio and sprang into action.
"I heard the call, turned on the lights of my personal vehicle, and followed them to the scene," Captain Costa explained.
Upon arrival, every second counted. "The vehicle was seconds away from being underwater," Costa stated.
Challenging Rescue Conditions
The elderly woman remained strapped in by her seatbelt as the car sank, complicating the rescue further. Rescuers opted to shatter the window instead of opening the door to prevent water from rushing in faster.
"We didn't want to risk opening the door and her not being able to get out in time. The best option was to break the window, help her unbuckle, and assist her through the open window," Costa elaborated.
Once out of the vehicle, the rescuers swam with her to the shore.
Aftermath and Context
The woman, the sole occupant of the car, was stable and is expected to make a full recovery. One of the deputies sustained minor injuries during the rescue.
