Spirit Airlines halted all its operations on Saturday morning, abruptly canceling all flights and marking the end of its 34-year history following the collapse of a last-minute $500 million government bailout negotiated with the Trump administration, as reported by the Miami Herald.

"It is with deep regret that Spirit Airlines has begun winding down its global operations, effective immediately. All flights have been canceled and customer service is no longer available," the airline announced in its official statement.

The bailout deal fell apart due to internal disagreements within the administration and the refusal of a key group of bondholders to accept the proposed terms, which would have involved up to 90% government stake in the company.

President Donald Trump had offered Spirit a "final proposal" for a government-funded takeover, but negotiations didn’t succeed.

Known for its yellow planes and bare-bones fares, the airline was based at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, having moved to Dania Beach, Florida from Detroit in 1999.

Impact on Fort Lauderdale Airport

The shutdown delivers a severe blow to the airport: by 2025, Spirit was the leading carrier with a 28% market share and carried more passengers than any other airline to or from the terminal.

At the time of closure, the company employed more than 17,000 people.

Spirit's downfall was the result of years of accumulated crises. The airline first declared bankruptcy in November 2024, with debts exceeding $7.4 billion and accumulated losses of $2.5 billion since 2020.

It emerged from that initial bankruptcy in March 2025, but filed for a second court protection—known as "Chapter 22"—just five months later, an unprecedented event in American aviation since 2010.

Fuel Prices and Final Blow

The 95% spike in aviation fuel prices, caused by the military conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran that started on February 28, 2026, was the final blow for an airline already on life support.

Roger Hayder, a passenger who arrived at Fort Lauderdale following his flight's cancellation, captured the ordeal faced by thousands: "I booked a flight, tried to get my boarding pass, and it said canceled. I tried reaching out to them, but nothing."

Relief Efforts for Stranded Passengers

The U.S. Department of Transportation immediately activated a relief program for stranded passengers. Secretary Sean Duffy stated, "Within hours, we have mobilized our partner airlines to ensure passengers are not stranded, communities maintain access to routes, fares do not skyrocket, and Spirit's workforce has access to new job opportunities."

JetBlue is offering $99 rescue fares to stranded passengers and expanding its service from Fort Lauderdale with 11 new destinations. Frontier, American, Delta, and Avianca also announced reduced fares or free returns based on availability.

Spirit will automatically process refunds for tickets purchased with credit or debit cards.

Passengers who booked with vouchers or Free Spirit points must wait for the bankruptcy court process to determine their compensation. Fort Lauderdale airport advised travelers not to head to the airport if they have Spirit tickets.

Spirit's Legacy in Florida

The airline also operated flights to Cuba from Fort Lauderdale between 2016 and May 2017, serving as an important link for the Cuban-American community in Florida before withdrawing from those routes.

"We are proud of the impact our ultra-low-cost model has had on the industry over the past 33 years and had hoped to continue serving our customers for many more years," Spirit stated on Saturday, announcing its definitive closure.
