The Cuban regime is attempting to shift the narrative surrounding teenager Jonathan David Muir Burgos by releasing a carefully staged image of him playing piano during a cultural event inside Canaleta prison in Ciego de Ávila, where he remains detained.
This scene, shared by the pro-government platform Razones de Cuba, shows Jonathan standing and smiling at a keyboard, presented as evidence that his health is not as critical as activists and social media have claimed.
Nevertheless, concerns remain despite the image. The official narrative itself admits that the young man is ill and requires medical attention, while trying to dismiss reports of his physical decline as part of a supposed "disinformation campaign."
The message insists that photos showing Jonathan hospitalized are from past years, not his current condition. Yet, it skirts around the central questions: What is his current diagnosis? What medical care is he receiving in the penal system? Why is he still imprisoned under these conditions?
For many Cubans, both inside and outside the island, the image of him at the piano doesn't quell doubts but rather deepens them. The use of an ailing minor in a public act within prison walls suggests a regime more interested in controlling the narrative than providing transparency about his true situation.
Jonathan's father, evangelical pastor Elier Muir Ávila, has repeatedly contradicted the regime's narrative: "My son is indeed sick and does need treatment," he has stated.
In prior statements, the father had been even more explicit: "He is malnourished, losing weight every day. He's very thin," warning that "his life is in danger."
A single image of him at a keyboard doesn't contradict the family's specific allegations: Jonathan receives only one small meal a day, suffers untreated bug bites, experiences severe dehydration, has streptococcal and staphylococcal infections, and is afflicted by two untreated intestinal parasites.
In a desperate call to his father at 1:45 a.m. on April 23, the teenager pleaded, "Dad, please, get me out of here, I can't take it anymore."
During that same call, he added, "The bugs are biting me again, I can't sleep, they’re infecting my skin, and I feel like my brain can't take it anymore."
Jonathan's mother, pastor Minervina Burgos López, broke her silence on the 37th day of his detention to describe episodes of disorientation and vasovagal crises: "He has crises: he falls asleep and wakes up disoriented, not remembering where he is, unable to orient himself properly."
Jonathan was arrested on March 16, 2026, after participating in the March 13 protests in Morón, sparked by over 26-hour daily blackouts and extreme food shortages. Despite his minor status, he was transferred to Canaleta, a maximum-security adult prison, and charged with sabotage, a crime carrying a potential sentence of seven to 15 years.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights granted precautionary measures to the minor via Resolution 30/2026, recognizing that his rights to life, personal integrity, and health are at risk of irreparable harm. The Cuban regime did not respond to a prior request sent by the organization on April 10.
Razones de Cuba is a State Security tool linked to Humberto López, a state television journalist and member of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee. Meta blocked its Facebook and Instagram accounts in May 2025 for community guideline violations, and in 2022 dismantled a network of nearly a thousand fake accounts designed to amplify its propaganda.
U.S. Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart reiterated last Tuesday his demand: "From the United States, we demand FREEDOM now for Jonathan David Muir Burgos! No minor should be persecuted or imprisoned for speaking out against a dictatorship."
