FIU's President Celebrates Willy Chirino with Honorary Degree: "Our Day is on the Horizon"

Tuesday, April 28, 2026 by Abigail Marquez

Jeanette Nuñez, the president of Florida International University (FIU), took to X this Tuesday to share a heartfelt message after bestowing an honorary doctorate in music to Cuban-American singer-songwriter Willy Chirino. Her statement concluded with a phrase full of symbolism: "Don't worry, our day is on the horizon."

The ceremony was held on Monday at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on FIU's Modesto Maidique campus in Miami, attended by around 6,000 graduates and their families as part of the university's spring graduation events.

Nuñez expressed in her post, "It was an honor to confer the honorary doctorate in music to the singer, songwriter, musician, and legend Willy Chirino. We honor and celebrate your extraordinary career. Congratulations, Willy!"

The final phrase is a direct nod to the Cuban exile anthem that Chirino wrote in 1991, following the fall of the Berlin Wall, when exiles hoped for the collapse of communism in Cuba.

Chirino's Emotional Acceptance and Message to Graduates

Upon receiving the award, Nuñez emphasized that the recognition extends beyond music: "Not only for all he has achieved in music, but also for the cause of freedom. Our students truly understand the importance of these values."

Chirino, visibly moved, ended his thank-you speech with a fervent "Long live free Cuba!" prompting a standing ovation.

Before closing, the artist addressed the graduates directly: "Dream, and it will happen. But don't dream small. Dream as big as you can, without limits. I stand here before you as living proof that it can occur."

He also shared one of his deepest dreams: "I have a dream very close to my heart: that Cuba will be free this year."

A Legacy of Dreams and Achievements

Chirino humorously revealed that the confirmation of the doctorate came just a week before the event, sharing that his parents—his father a lawyer, and his mother a pharmacist—always wished for him to earn such a title: "Music got in the way. Today, they would be very happy."

He jokingly added how he wishes to be addressed from now on: "Doctor, please!"

The honorary doctorate nomination was approved by FIU's Board of Trustees on April 20, not long after Chirino recorded a symphonic version of "Ya viene llegando" with the university's orchestra.

His wife, Cuban singer Lissette Álvarez, attended the ceremony and expressed her pride: "He has put so much effort and love into his career that this recognition is a great reward. The doctor Willy."

FIU's Historic Leadership and Community Impact

Nuñez, herself a Cuban-American and the daughter of exiles, became the seventh president of FIU in June 2025. She is both the first alum and the first woman to hold this position at an institution that hosts one of the largest Cuban-American university communities in the United States.

Born in Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, Chirino came to Miami at the age of 14 as part of Operation Pedro Pan in 1961. Since then, he has built a career spanning over 50 years with more than 20 albums, and is regarded as one of the creators of the "Miami Sound."

His song "Ya viene llegando" is banned from Cuban state media, yet its message has transcended borders. In March, Chirino reacted emotionally upon seeing the phrase painted on a wall in Havana, commenting: "The whole world is waiting for it now."

The honorary degree in music awarded by FIU to Willy Chirino thus crowns a symbolic relationship that had been developing over previous months between the artist and the institution, with Nuñez sealing it with the very words of the Cuban exile anthem.
