Cuban-American broadcaster Enrique Santos unveiled his deepest personal aspiration this past Sunday during his participation in the "United for a Free Cuba" rally at the FPL Solar Amphitheater in Bayfront Park, Miami. He dreams of broadcasting on the radio in a free Cuba and visiting the island with his parents before they pass away.
Santos, who has never set foot in Cuba despite being the son and grandson of Cuban exiles, shared his heartfelt testimony in an interview with Martí Noticias during the event, which he described as a historic moment for the Cuban freedom cause.
"I have a profound dream of being able to do radio in a free Cuba, of visiting Cuba, because I've never been there, but going with my parents before they pass," stated the host of the Enrique Santos Morning Show on TÚ 94.9 FM in Miami.
Reflecting on his family's history, Santos recalled with sorrow that all four of his grandparents passed away without returning to their homeland or witnessing a free Cuba.
"My grandparents have all passed, and unfortunately, their dream was never realized; their homeland was stolen from them," he lamented.
A Beacon of Hope Amidst Political Change
Despite the weight of his family's history, Santos remains optimistic in light of the current political climate.
"We are at a historic moment where everything is aligned, and we might soon see Cuba's freedom," he emphasized, highlighting Marco Rubio, the Cuban-American Secretary of State, as a crucial figure in these times.
The Sunday rally marked the second major mobilization of exiles in less than a month in South Florida, following the Free Cuba Rally held in Hialeah on March 24.
Organized by the Cuban Resistance Assembly (ARC) and the Support and Convocation Committee, the event featured activists like Silvia Iriondo and Rosa María Payá, alongside artists such as Amaury Gutiérrez.
Global Reach of the Rally
What set the event apart was its reach beyond Miami: it was broadcast directly to the island via Radio Martí and TV Martí, and simultaneously echoed in churches in Cuba and countries like Uruguay, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Chile, and Mexico.
Santos also called on the younger generations of exiles to continue the fight, honoring those who could not witness the change.
"This struggle has fallen to us, and there are so many from the Cuban exile community who are no longer here, who lent their voices and platforms... so it is up to the new generation to raise their voices," he urged.
The Grim Reality Behind the Rally
The backdrop of the event is stark: according to Prisoners Defenders, Cuba recorded a record of 1,250 verified political prisoners in March 2026, with a cumulative 2,026 since July 2021, a figure the Cuban exile community repeatedly cites as evidence of the regime's repression.
Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, Executive Secretary of the ARC, was clear in his demands: "We support a strong and tough policy against the regime and want real change. Real change means the Castro family leaving and the Communist Party stepping down from power."
In March, the Cuban exile community signed the "Liberation Agreement," a three-phase plan for political transition in Cuba, framing these mobilizations within a broader strategy of coordinated pressure.
Santos concluded his message with a direct appeal to Cubans both on the island and abroad: "A Cuba where Cubans can truly choose their next leaders democratically, without the Castros, without communism. Cuba, we are with you now and always."
