An investigation by the CubaNet team, released this Monday, unveils that Roberto Carlos Chamizo González, the individual acting as a messenger for Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro—popularly known as 'The Crab'—was tasked with delivering a letter to President Donald Trump. Contrary to the independent entrepreneur image he projects on social media, Chamizo González is not what he seems.

Chamizo González, who is the nephew of retired Ministry of the Interior (MININT) colonel Carlos Miguel Chamizo Trujillo, is actually a trained official from this oppressive institution, working under the guise of a business operator, as reported by the independent media outlet.

The trusted aide of 'The Crab' arrived in Miami during the weekend of April 18 and 19 with the letter bearing an official seal. This occurred a day after Axios confirmed that Rodríguez Castro—a MININT lieutenant colonel and head of his grandfather Raúl Castro's personal security—participated in a meeting in Havana in mid-April with State Department officials.

The Unraveling of a Covert Operation

However, this intricate episode concluded with a twist emblematic of the strategic cunning of the island's most infamous "crustacean": A Customs agent seized the letter and deported Chamizo González back to Cuba due to his lack of diplomatic status.

Analysts like Peter Kornbluh suggest this operation was meticulously crafted to bypass Secretary of State Marco Rubio and establish a direct line to Trump. "The Cubans appear to be attempting to sidestep Rubio and deliver a clear message straight to Trump," Kornbluh shared with CubaNet.

A Background Shrouded in Secrecy

Six sources from Chamizo González's personal and family circle verified to the media that the 37-year-old attended the "Hermanos Martínez Tamayo" Vocational Pre-University Institute, a MININT academy, from 2003 to 2006. He graduated from the University of Havana in 2011 with the rank of lieutenant and was assigned to MININT's Special Operations Department.

Shortly thereafter, he joined the International Operations Department of the Central Bank of Cuba. There, he was part of a financial monitoring group operating in Europe and Asia, internally referred to as the "Team Party."

"He entered as a fresh graduate—smart, charismatic, good-looking, friendly... In short, the perfect facade for our operations," recounted a source from the bank based in Havana. Being the youngest in the group, his colleagues nicknamed him 'The Kid.'

Chamizo executed missions in London, Switzerland, Dubai, and Madrid until 2018. His financial backing is no mystery: the funds for his business ventures originated from the "friends" he made during these travels and under this facade, according to a former bank official now in Panama.

The Business Front: More Than It Seems

His business facade includes the El Patrón tourist estate in East Havana, which expanded from a MININT-administered pig farm run by his uncle, seizing lands from farmers through forced evictions since 2023. "They operate like a mafia," denounced a member of an affected farming family.

El Patrón was added to Gaviota Tours' excursion catalog—part of the military conglomerate GAESA—by "high-level" decisions, not commercial criteria.

Chamizo González also manages the luxury transportation service Havana Prestige, apartments in Vedado and Centro Habana rented for over $280 per night, and the Mía Culpa Havana restaurant, located inside the GAESA-owned Iberostar Grand Packard Hotel. In December 2025, he established RCCH Investment SL in Spain.

On social media, Chamizo conceals his full name, going by 'Carlos Milán' and sharing images aboard yachts, jets, and luxury cars. A source familiar with the relationship between Chamizo and 'The Crab' summed it up succinctly: "They are two peas in a pod."

Secret Negotiations: A Diplomatic Tangle

The episode is part of ongoing secret negotiations between Cuba and the United States, initiated in February 2026 when 'The Crab' began reaching out to Rubio.

On April 10, a State Department delegation arrived in Havana on the first official U.S. flight since 2016 and formally met with Rodríguez Castro.

Washington issued a two-week ultimatum for the release of high-profile political prisoners like Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Osorbo, a deadline that passed around April 24 with no visible outcomes.

Ricardo Herrero, executive director of the Cuba Study Group, criticized the strategy of sending the secret letter as "foolish and doomed to fail," a judgment that gains more weight now that the true nature of the man entrusted with such a delicate mission is known.
