Carlos Tabares, the iconic Cuban baseball star and former center fielder for the Havana Industriales, is reportedly recovering well in Miami following surgery to remove a malignant kidney tumor. This update was shared by sports journalist Yasel Porto on his Facebook page, Dporto Sports.

Tabares himself reassured fans with a personal message, stating: "I am feeling much better, thank God. Many thanks to everyone who has been concerned about my health over the past days. Now it's time to recover."

According to a report by contributor Pucho Oroza, the surgery took place roughly a month ago. The tumor, measuring approximately 13 centimeters, was successfully removed, allowing a portion of the affected kidney to be preserved without any lasting damage.

Victory Against the Odds

Oroza used baseball metaphors to describe the event: "Carlos Tabares has won one of the most important games of his career. As always, he gave it his all on the field. The former Blue Captain has snatched a home run from death and, in another masterful play, has defeated cancer."

The publication highlights that Tabares is focused on his personal recovery and is also planning a digital venture for selling high-value items.

A Storied Career

Tabares played in 25 National Series with the Industriales, amassing over 1,000 hits and hitting 102 home runs. He was an Olympic champion with Cuba at the 2004 Athens Olympics and won a silver medal at the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic. With the Industriales, he claimed six national championships.

One of the most notable decisions of his career was turning down multimillion-dollar offers from Major League Baseball, including $5 million from the Cincinnati Reds and $8 million from the Chicago Cubs, choosing to remain in Cuba instead.

He officially retired on January 11, 2018, at Havana’s Latin American Stadium in front of over 50,000 fans, marking a memorable farewell in Cuban baseball history.

New Beginnings in Miami

After emigrating to the United States, Tabares settled in Miami, where he now works as a financial agent, teaches baseball, and participates in popular softball leagues. Just weeks prior to the public learning about his surgery, Tabares was involved in a heated debate within the Cuban exile community after accepting a gift from Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, a national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution and one of the so-called "Cuban Five."

At that time, Tabares commented, "The past is the past, it has nothing to do with what one has today."

Oroza concluded his piece by capturing the essence of Tabares’ journey: "The stellar outfielder of the Industriales and Cuba is back in the game, ready to score another significant run in his life."
