The U.S. ambassador to Argentina, Cuban-American Peter Lamelas, announced his participation in the joint naval exercises between the U.S. and Argentine navies in the South Atlantic. In a post on his official X account, he declared, “The USS Nimitz is heading to the South Atlantic, and I’ll be there.”

This statement came as a direct response to the Argentine Armed Forces' announcement that the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, along with its air wing and the destroyer USS Gridley, would conduct maneuvers with the Argentine Navy during its transit through the Argentine Sea.

For these exercises, Argentina has designated six surface units: the destroyers ARA Sarandí (D-13) and ARA La Argentina (D-11), the corvettes ARA Robinson (P-45) and ARA Rosales (P-42), and the ocean patrol vessels ARA Piedrabuena (P-52) and ARA Contraalmirante Cordero (P-54).

Additionally, two Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King helicopters and two Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft from the Argentine Naval Aviation will be involved.

According to specialized media, the exercises are set to occur off the coasts of Necochea and Quequén in Buenos Aires province.

Geopolitical Context of the USS Nimitz Deployment

The deployment of the USS Nimitz to the South Atlantic comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

Last Friday, Reuters leaked a confidential Pentagon document suggesting a reconsideration of Washington's historical neutrality on the Falklands as a pressure tactic against NATO allies—particularly the United Kingdom—that did not support U.S. military operations against Iran.

Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson did not deny the memorandum, stating that "credible options" would be presented to President Trump.

President Javier Milei reiterated that “the Falklands were, are, and always will be Argentine,” while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed any threats and reaffirmed the "undisputed sovereignty" based on the islanders' right to self-determination.

Symbolic Significance of Ambassador Lamelas' Presence

In this context, Ambassador Lamelas' participation in the naval exercises holds significant symbolic weight.

Lamelas, a Cuban-American doctor and entrepreneur born in Cuba who came to Florida at age four on a Red Cross boat, was appointed by Trump on December 12, 2024, as part of a strategy to place Cuban-Americans in key foreign policy positions towards Latin America, alongside Marco Rubio as Secretary of State and Mauricio Claver-Carone handling Latin American Affairs.

Lamelas describes himself as “Cuban by birth, American by the grace of God.”

On Saturday, a day before confirming his attendance at the exercises, Lamelas publicly praised the Milei government's reforms, stating: “The world is watching Argentina, and it likes what it sees. With Javier Milei’s reforms: stability, clear rules, and a real direction. Investment is already flowing in.”
