A sudden Automatic Frequency Disconnection (AFD) plunged several districts of Havana into darkness this Wednesday, as reported by the capital's Electric Company through its official Telegram channel.

"We wish to inform our Capital clients that due to an Automatic Frequency Disconnection (AFD), the electric service has been disrupted in various districts," emphasized the brief announcement.

On Wednesday, the Electric Union (UNE) had projected a disruption of 1,100 MW during the peak demand hours.

According to reports, by 6:00 a.m., the National Electric System (SEN) already showed 266 MW affected, with a demand of 2,136 MW and availability of 1,980 MW. By midday, UNE anticipated cuts amounting to 750 MW.

The only expected improvement for the evening peak was the addition of 150 MW from unit four of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes thermoelectric plant, which is in the start-up process.

However, an availability of just 2,130 MW was projected against a demand of 3,200 MW, leaving a deficit of 1,070 MW.

This Wednesday, five thermoelectric units remained out of service due to malfunctions at the Ernesto Guevara De La Serna, Diez de Octubre, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Antonio Maceo, and Felton plants.

Additionally, three units are undergoing maintenance at the Mariel, Renté, and Nuevitas plants, not to mention 381 MW of additional thermal limitations that are offline.

This latest blackout follows a report from Abel Fernández Díaz, director of Havana's Water Aqueduct, just a week ago, revealing that more than 200,000 residents—around 11% of the capital's population—were without regular access to potable water due to the rolling blackouts impacting Cuba.

Moreover, at the beginning of the month, Havana's Electric Company announced that an Automatic Frequency Disconnection (AFD) had again left several of the city's districts without power, adding yet another incident to the ongoing series of failures plaguing the city as of 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions About Havana's Power Crisis

What is an Automatic Frequency Disconnection (AFD)?

An Automatic Frequency Disconnection (AFD) is a safety mechanism that automatically cuts off power to prevent damage to the electrical grid when certain frequency thresholds are exceeded.

How is the power situation affecting Havana's residents?

The ongoing power outages have significantly impacted daily life in Havana, leaving many residents without reliable electricity or access to potable water. This has disrupted both domestic activities and essential services.

What are the projected power deficits in Havana?

Havana is currently facing a significant power deficit, with an anticipated shortfall of 1,070 MW during peak hours due to insufficient power availability compared to demand.
