A semi-truck overturned late Monday night on the northbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike in Broward County, causing extensive traffic delays during Tuesday morning's rush hour due to ongoing cleanup efforts that resulted in lane closures.

The incident took place near exit 49, close to Hollywood Boulevard and Pines Boulevard in Hollywood, as confirmed by the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Honda sedan collided with the semi-truck, leading the truck to hit a guardrail and overturn, stopping just about 10 feet from a nearby body of water.

The truck driver required extraction from the vehicle and received medical care for a hand injury.

The driver of the Honda was cited for careless driving, according to the Highway Patrol.

The accident caused a spill of spray bottles, miscellaneous items, and over 50 gallons of fuel onto the roadway and adjacent grass areas.

Aerial footage captured around 6:15 AM on Tuesday depicted the overturned truck on the embankment, with its contents scattered across the grass.

Reports indicate that the 18-wheeler's driver apparently made a sharp turn, which caused the collision with the guardrail, narrowly avoiding a plunge into a nearby lake before coming to a stop by the water's edge.

Cleanup operations kept two northbound lanes and the Turnpike access from Hollywood Boulevard closed. Authorities advised drivers to use U.S. 441 or Interstate 95 as alternate routes while crews continued removing debris.

A second incident on the same northbound Turnpike, before Interstate 595, also caused delays with two lanes blocked, further exacerbating the morning traffic chaos; the recommended detour for this situation was I-95 as well.

This is not the first time such an accident has impacted this highway. In February 2025, a trailer truck carrying wine overturned on the Florida Turnpike in Broward, requiring the rescue of the driver trapped inside the cab.

Just weeks later, in March 2025, two trucks collided on the Turnpike in Miami-Dade, blocking three lanes for several hours.

Florida's Turnpike is one of the state's most heavily traveled toll roads, with approximately three million vehicles using it daily, meaning any accident on its lanes significantly affects South Florida's traffic flow.
