"I'm Not Crazy, Just Exhausted": Cuban Champion Responds After Havana Protest

Monday, April 20, 2026 by Hannah Aguilar

Cuban mixed martial arts champion Javier Martín Gutiérrez, known as Spiderman, has addressed accusations of madness and drug use following his four-day peaceful solo protest in Havana. Gutiérrez, who competes in the 135-pound category for the Cuban Fighting League (CPL), made his stance clear this past Sunday.

The athlete appeared in a new video shared on social media by rapper and activist El Funky — Eliecer Márquez Duany, who is currently in exile in the United States and a co-author of "Patria y Vida." In the video, Gutiérrez clarified his mental and physical state while explaining the purpose behind his unshaven look and bare feet with dirty nails.

"I haven't put anything harmful into my body for years. As you can see, I'm perfectly fine mentally, physically, and spiritually," stated the fighter, who has been stationed on his balcony on Havana's 31st Avenue as a form of protest against the Cuban regime.

In previous days, the athlete had boldly challenged State Security, daring authorities to arrest him if they deemed his protest illegal, a courageous move that has drawn attention both within Cuba and internationally.

His actions stand in stark contrast to the Cuban government's assertions that no one is detained for expressing themselves and their denial of political prisoners in the country.

Activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a member of the San Isidro Movement, also publicly supported Spiderman's protest, joining others who back this act of civil resistance.
