This past Saturday, María Corina Machado led a remarkable gathering at Madrid's Puerta del Sol, where tens of thousands of Venezuelans living abroad hailed her with chants of "President!" and "Freedom!" Estimates suggest the crowd reached up to 200,000 people.

Venezuelans traveled from various parts of Spain and Europe, carrying tricolor flags and banners with slogans such as "María Corina, hope and freedom," "Freedom for political prisoners," and "Return home to Venezuela." The atmosphere was charged with emotion, tears, and embraces.

From the balcony of the Community of Madrid headquarters, where she was awarded the Gold Medal by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Machado energized the crowd: "With all this energy I'm feeling from you, we will return to Venezuela."

In her speech at the Puerta del Sol, the opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate was clear about the path to democracy: "The guarantee of stability and peace in Venezuela lies in clean and free elections, so we can move forward with an orderly transition."

Machado also addressed those who doubt the electoral feasibility: "Some allies of the regime have claimed Venezuela isn't ready for elections, but we will prove them wrong. On July 28, we dismantled the fraud."

She also announced her imminent return to Venezuela alongside President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia: "I will return to Venezuela soon, and I will do so with our esteemed President Edmundo González Urrutia, a man who has earned the world's respect, love, and admiration."

European Tour Culminates in Madrid

The Saturday event followed a 27-minute interview Machado gave at Telecinco studios, marking her first appearance on Spanish television. She shared her experiences of living in hiding, her escape from Venezuela by boat, and her conversation with Donald Trump, moving the Venezuelan workers at the channel.

The visit to Madrid was the highlight of a European tour that began on April 13 in Paris, where she was received by Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.

On Friday, Machado received the Golden Key from the Madrid City Council, presented by Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida. She met with Popular Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo—who greeted her with "Brave!"—and Santiago Abascal of Vox, as well as attended a meeting with five Cuban activists at the PP headquarters on Génova Street.

Machado did not meet with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who was attending a summit in Barcelona.

Machado's Daring Escape and Resilient Spirit

The Nobel Peace Prize winner fled Venezuela on December 11, 2025, in a covert operation supported by the United States, after spending 16 months in hiding to evade an arrest warrant from Nicolás Maduro's regime and a travel ban in place for over a decade.

Madrid, home to Europe's largest Venezuelan community, became the symbolic epicenter of a diaspora that, as one eyewitness described, transitioned from absence to a powerful presence.

"This is a day I'll remember for the rest of my life, a day when Venezuela's cry for freedom echoed," Machado told the crowd that filled the plaza.
