Trump Predicts Imminent Change for Cuba Long Anticipated by Its People

Saturday, April 18, 2026 by James Rodriguez

At a Turning Point USA rally in Arizona, President Donald Trump assured a crowd of thousands that the formidable strength of the U.S. military will soon usher in a new dawn for Cuba, a change that has been awaited for 70 years.

"Very soon, this great strength will also bring about a day that has been 70 years in the making. It's called a new dawn for Cuba. We're going to help them with Cuba," Trump announced.

Addressing the Cuban American community directly, Trump described them as individuals "brutally treated, whose families were killed and brutalized," concluding with a symbolic warning: "And now, watch what happens."

Trump's statement is not an isolated incident but rather the latest in a series of increasingly explicit presidential comments on Cuba.

On March 16, Trump declared from the White House: "I think I will have the honor of taking Cuba." Later, on March 27, in Miami Beach, he jokingly remarked, "Cuba is next, but pretend I didn't say that."

Just two days before the Phoenix rally, he added, "We might stop by Cuba after we're done with this," referencing the conflict with Iran.

Simultaneously, on the same Friday, the Trump administration proposed installing Starlink in Cuba in exchange for free elections, the release of political prisoners, and compensation for assets confiscated since 1959, as per discussions between the State Department and the Cuban regime.

According to a USA Today report on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources, the Pentagon has accelerated planning for a potential military operation in Cuba following a new White House directive, with the Department of Defense confirming readiness to act upon Trump's command.

Trump has cited past military successes, including the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela in January 2026 and Operation Epic Fury against Iran, initiated on February 28, as models of action.

The Díaz-Canel regime has responded with rhetoric of defiance. On April 7, in an interview with Newsweek, it warned of significant losses for any invading force. Last Wednesday, it highlighted the anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion, urging citizens to prepare for combat, stating: "We are ready to fight."

Cuba is facing its most severe economic crisis in decades: the economy has contracted by 23% since 2019, power outages last up to 20 hours a day, and a further 7.2% economic decline is projected for 2026, worsened by the seizure of Venezuelan tankers that supplied the island amidst Operation Southern Spear.

Cuban American Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart succinctly summed up the situation with a resonant phrase among exiles: the regime in Cuba has never been weaker.
