Angélica Peña has taken to Facebook to publicly denounce the theft of belongings from her mother's suitcase at the Frank País International Airport in Holguín. This incident once again highlights the persistent issue of luggage theft at Cuba's airports.
According to Peña, her mother, who was returning from a trip, decided to check her carry-on luggage into the airplane's cargo hold. She was transporting several Cuban perfumes she had purchased as gifts, in addition to personal items.
Upon retrieving her baggage after landing, she noticed something was amiss. The suitcase felt lighter than usual, and the zipper appeared to have been tampered with.
Once home, a thorough inspection revealed that two perfumes were missing. Additionally, four boxes of thick cigarettes had vanished, and an envelope containing important documents related to property ownership was found opened.
"It's clear the person who rifled through the suitcase was looking for money. If there had been any, it would have been stolen too," Peña wrote in her post.
She described the incident as "a huge disrespect" and questioned the lack of accountability that seems prevalent in such cases.
"It's incredibly frustrating that these things happen without consequence. How many more people are going through the same ordeal?" she asked.
In her message, Peña also issued a warning to travelers heading to the island: "Please, everyone traveling to Cuba: be extremely cautious with your belongings, especially when checking luggage. We cannot continue to normalize this kind of situation."
Similar incidents have been frequently reported on social media, where travelers share experiences of partial luggage theft, suitcase tampering, and loss of valuable items, often without any known investigation outcomes or punishment for those responsible.
This ongoing issue exacerbates the sense of insecurity at the country's airport facilities and heightens the concerns of travelers who increasingly take extra precautions to safeguard their belongings.
Understanding Luggage Theft Concerns at Cuban Airports

Has there been any action taken by Cuban authorities to address luggage theft?
Although numerous complaints have been made, there is little public information regarding effective actions taken by authorities to curb these thefts. The lack of transparency in investigations contributes to ongoing traveler concerns.
