Cuban Mother's Consular Appointment Derailed by Son's Heartfelt Surprise

Tuesday, April 14, 2026 by Felix Ortiz

Meysel Pereira, a Cuban mother, encountered an unexpected twist on the very day of her scheduled consular appointment. Her seven-year-old son, Xavier, had lovingly inscribed "I LOVE YOU MOM" and his name in red ink on the visa pages of her Cuban passport.

This discovery, which Meysel shared through a Facebook video, immediately thwarted her consular process, leaving her torn between laughter and tears.

"I had a consular appointment today, and when I pulled out my passport, I found this big surprise. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. But one thing I am certain about is my son's love for me," Meysel recounted.

The altered pages display "I LOVE YOU MOM" with a heart on the left page, and "XAVIER R." with another heart on the right.

She humorously acknowledged the practical impact of her son's gesture: "This kid is the last straw. So, the consular appointment is shot," she joked in the video.

She further lightheartedly remarked on the situation with a phrase capturing her mixed emotions: "Who needs a consular appointment when I have an ambassador at home?"

From a legal standpoint, the damage is irreversible. International travel document regulations state that any passport with unauthorized writing, alterations, or annotations is immediately void, regardless of whether the intervention was deliberate or accidental.

This situation forces Meysel to apply for a new passport, a process that costs around $180 for Cubans living abroad, as per current fees since 2022, reaffirmed by the Cuban government earlier this year to deny rumors of a price hike.

Adding to this expense is the challenge of securing another consular appointment, a chronic issue for the Cuban diaspora where demand far exceeds the capacity of consular services, leading to waits that can last weeks or even months.

The broader context exacerbates the situation. From April 1, 2025, Cuba requires a valid passport for citizens to enter the island, increasing the pressure on passport renewal processes abroad.

Despite everything, Meysel concluded her post with a reflection that resonated with her followers: "Sometimes plans change, but there are moments that remind you of what truly matters. The only thing I know is that love always finds a way to make itself known."
