Who is Péter Magyar? From Orbán's Ally to the Architect of His Downfall in Hungary

Attorney Péter Magyar emerged victorious in Hungary's parliamentary elections on Sunday, leading the Tisza party to a resounding win with 53.65% of the vote. This historic victory brings an end to Viktor Orbán's 16-year reign, marking the most significant political shift in the nation since its democratic transition in 1989-1990.

The Tisza party secured 138 out of the 199 seats in the unicameral Parliament, surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold of 133 seats. This dominance allows Magyar to push forward constitutional reforms without needing support from other parties. Orbán's party, Fidesz-KDNP, managed to secure only 37.76% of the vote and 55 seats. Acknowledging the defeat, Orbán stated to his supporters, "The results are painful for us but clear: the responsibility to govern does not fall on us. I have congratulated the winning party," as reported by La Vanguardia.

The Man Behind the Political Upset

So, who is the individual who accomplished what seemed unattainable for years? Born on March 16, 1981, in Budapest, Magyar graduated with degrees in Law and Humanities from the Péter Pázmány Catholic University. His political journey began within the realm of Fidesz, having been an ardent admirer of Orbán in his youth. Joining the party in 2002, he advanced his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in Hungary's permanent representation to the European Union in Brussels, and in the Prime Minister's Office from 2015.

Magyar's former wife, Judit Varga, served as Minister of Justice from 2019 to 2023, placing Magyar at the heart of Orbán's establishment.

A Turning Point and New Beginnings

The rupture came in February 2024 when Magyar resigned from his positions in state enterprises, releasing recordings of conversations with Varga. In these, she admitted to intervening in a 2022 presidential pardon for individuals convicted of covering up child abuse in an orphanage. The ensuing scandal led to the resignations of President Katalin Novák and Varga herself.

On March 15, 2024, Magyar announced the creation of his new political platform, assuming leadership of Tisza, a small party he quickly transformed into the primary opposition force within just two years.

The Ideological Balance

Magyar's most distinctive trait is his hybrid ideological profile. Unlike others, he did not base his platform on direct cultural confrontation with Orbán. While sharing values such as national defense, family emphasis, and sovereignty rhetoric, Magyar offers a more pro-European stance, focuses on anti-corruption, and adopts a pragmatic foreign policy, distancing himself from Orbán's overt alignment with Russia.

This balance allowed him to build a broad coalition: disenchanted Fidesz voters, urban sectors, youth, and traditional opposition supporters who viewed him as the only viable alternative to unseat the outgoing prime minister.

Unlike previous opposition efforts, Magyar avoided fragmented coalitions. He chose to build his own platform, uniting diverse perspectives under a common goal. By the European elections in June 2024, Tisza had already garnered 29.6% of the vote, the best non-Fidesz result since 2006.

Tisza's Vision for Hungary

The centerpiece of his agenda is Hungary's immediate entry into the European Public Prosecutor's Office to audit the use of public funds and unlock the 18 billion euros frozen by the European Union due to rule of law violations.

The election saw a record turnout of 79.01% nationwide, surpassing the previous high of 70.53% in 2002. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the outcome, stating, "Hungary has chosen Europe. Europe has always chosen Hungary. A country claims its European path. The Union is strengthened."
