Renowned Cuban filmmaker Juan Pin Vilar recently took to Facebook to deliver a scathing critique aimed directly at Miguel Díaz-Canel. In his post, Vilar did not hold back, labeling Díaz-Canel as a major incompetent and accusing him of being the most mediocre and incapable politician he has ever witnessed in Cuba since 1959.

The immediate trigger for Vilar's comments was an interview Díaz-Canel had with journalist Kristen Welker on NBC News' "Meet the Press." During this interview, Díaz-Canel appeared visibly annoyed and evasive, displaying a remarkable lack of intellectual depth when faced with pointed questions about the country's ongoing crisis.

"My friend, we've had ridiculous, mediocre, and bland politicians in our history, but Díaz-Canel, you've set the bar incredibly high. Brother, you're a colossal fool," Vilar boldly stated.

The filmmaker went even further by comparing the leader to independent journalist Yoani Sánchez: "You couldn't last a round with Yoani Sánchez, whom I've only greeted two or three times in my life, yet her intellectual rigor is evident."

Vilar's Unyielding Critique

Regarding the NBC interview, Vilar was equally harsh: "The NBC journalist must have been stunned by such stupidity, so much emptiness of ideas."

During the interview, Welker asked Díaz-Canel if he would consider stepping down to save Cuba. His retort was defensive: "Have you asked any other president in the world that question? Would you pose that to President Trump? Is this your question or one from the U.S. State Department?" Welker defended her questioning, noting she had asked similar questions to Trump.

Vilar didn't stop there. He invoked the figure of José Ramón Machado Ventura, one of the most controversial historical figures of Castroism, to draw a damning comparison: "Machado Ventura is a twisted, ill-conceived invention, scorned by every honest revolutionary with any sense who has lived on this island. But you surpass him by far."

A Call for Legitimate Voices

Vilar also highlighted activist René Fidel González alongside Yoani Sánchez as more legitimate voices for representing the Cuban people than the current leader: "What Yoani does—just like René Fidel—is walk the streets and report what she hears and sees. They have more right than you to speak on behalf of the people simply because they walk without fear."

Vilar concluded his message with a question that encapsulates the underlying issue of the regime's persecution of dissent: "What are you afraid of? A woman with a phone speaking on the street?" This was a direct reference to Yoani Sánchez, who was arbitrarily detained by state security on January 28th to prevent her from attending a diplomatic reception.

Vilar, a seasoned documentarian with a long history of standing against the regime's censorship, is no stranger to such criticisms. Back in June 2023, he publicly addressed Díaz-Canel, condemning the ban of his documentary "La Habana de Fito."
