Arnaldo Clavel Carmenaty, who led the official newspaper Sierra Maestra—an outlet of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Santiago de Cuba—for over ten years, passed away on Friday, April 10, in Havana at the age of 72.

The announcement was made by the newspaper's team on their social media platforms, where they expressed condolences to his wife, Bárbara, and daughter, Jessica.

Clavel Carmenaty devoted his entire professional life to serving Cuba's state-controlled media. He began his career at El Combatiente, the publication of the Eastern Army of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), where he worked as a press proofreader, chief editor, and union section secretary.

Later, he transitioned to the newspaper Sierra Maestra, serving as its director from March 1994 to July 2011. His 17-year tenure made him one of the longest-serving directors in the publication's history.

His involvement wasn't limited to journalism; he was also part of the Provincial Committee of the PCC in Santiago de Cuba and led the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) in the province. These roles underscore his deep integration into the regime's ideological apparatus.

Established in 1963, UPEC effectively operates as an extension of the PCC's Ideological Department, overseeing state media and sidelining independent journalism, according to international press freedom organizations.

While heading Sierra Maestra, Clavel also managed the Tele Turquino TV station before returning to print media. In his later years, he relocated to Havana, where he worked with the Cuban News Agency (ACN), another cog in the state's information machinery.

Sierra Maestra, founded on September 7, 1957, as an underground bulletin for the 26th of July Movement, evolved post-1959 into the regime's mouthpiece in eastern Cuba, consistently publishing content aligned with the official narrative while censoring inconvenient information.

A notable example of its propagandistic role was in September 2025, when the newspaper published—and later retracted—a piece blaming a "cowardly and criminal sabotage" for the collapse of the National Electric System in the East, a claim later contradicted by Santiago's Provincial Government itself.

The new Cuban Social Communication Law strengthens this media monopoly by recognizing only state and PCC-affiliated outlets, imposing prison sentences ranging from six months to three years for content that "subverts the constitutional order."
