A tragic car accident in Doral, Florida, on Tuesday evening claimed the lives of a teenage couple when their vehicle collided with a pole and was completely engulfed in flames.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 87th Avenue and 54th Street, just under a mile from their school, Downtown Doral Charter Upper School.
Alessia Tucci, aged 16, and her boyfriend Mateo Dávila, aged 17, were en route to a basketball tournament at Mater Academy when the accident happened.
Authorities reported that their sedan was traveling southbound on Northwest 87th Avenue when it went out of control, veered off the road, struck a pole, and was subsequently consumed by fire. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded swiftly to extinguish the blaze, but sadly both occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Mateo Dávila was a standout basketball player for his school's team and had an active college recruitment profile. The team paid tribute on Instagram, saying, "Rest in peace, dear player Mateo Dávila. You and your family will always be in our hearts."
Alessia Tucci had Venezuelan and Italian heritage, while Mateo was of Colombian and Mexican descent. Mateo's twin brother shared with Univision that the couple had been inseparable and very happy during their four-month relationship.
Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg, the school principal, issued a heartfelt statement expressing sorrow over the tragic event.
"Our entire community is in mourning over this unimaginable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, our faculty, and staff at both our elementary and high school, where they were currently studying. Both students deeply loved their school, teachers, coaches, and peers, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew them," she stated.
