A tragic incident unfolded at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital in Bayamo, Granma province, as a one-and-a-half-month-old infant lost her life after failing to receive a crucial antibiotic in time to treat a severe infection contracted within the hospital.
The heartbreaking situation was brought to light by Cuban dissident José Daniel Ferrer, who had previously warned about the critical state of the infant and the shortage of the antibiotic Aztreonam in Cuba, which was essential to combat the bacteria affecting the newborn.
Identified as Naelis Barrio Oliveira, the baby remained in the intensive care unit, requiring assisted ventilation and undergoing numerous medical procedures, while her family desperately sought the unavailable medication within the country.
Ferrer explained in a video that once the case was known, urgent efforts were made to procure the antibiotic from abroad and transport it to the island. However, due to the hospital-use nature of the drug and logistical limitations, it could not be delivered in time.
The dissident detailed that the medication was eventually sent thanks to the efforts of several individuals who managed to obtain not only the antibiotic but also necessary supplies for its administration. Sadly, the assistance arrived after the infant had already passed away.
Ferrer blamed the baby's death on the ongoing crisis in Cuba's healthcare system, holding the regime responsible for the lack of essential medicines, and highlighting that such situations predominantly affect the most impoverished families.
He also alleged that, following the public exposure of the case, State Security agents intervened at the hospital to investigate how information about the child's situation and the absence of the medication was leaked.
The leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) stated that these tragedies are not isolated incidents and warned that other children and the elderly remain at risk due to the shortage of pharmaceuticals and poor hospital conditions.
Furthermore, he emphasized that while the ruling elite enjoys privileged access to resources and medical care, the majority of Cubans are left with a collapsed system, unable to provide basic treatments during critical moments.
