Dionisio Manuel Oliva, a 42-year-old Cuban resident of Miami-Dade, was apprehended last Thursday following two attempts to forcibly enter his ex-girlfriend's home, steal a scooter, throw stones, and later return wielding a machete.

Oliva and the woman had been in a relationship for about two years prior to the incidents that unfolded on March 21 and March 29 at a residence on Southwest 126 Court, near 211 Street in southern Miami-Dade, according to a report by Local 10 News.

Incidents of March 21 and 29

The initial confrontation occurred when Oliva appeared at his former partner's residence under the pretext of retrieving a scooter he claimed belonged to him. When she asked him to leave and turned to close the door, he attempted to force his way inside.

The arrest report notes, "The victim was able to shut the door, causing the accused to become enraged." Oliva then picked up stones, hurling them at the house, one of which shattered the kitchen window and landed on the floor. Before fleeing, he took the scooter from the property.

Eight days later, on March 29, Oliva returned to the property. After being ignored when demanding entry, he retrieved a machete from his vehicle. The police report states that the accused used the weapon in an unsuccessful attempt to break the door handle before fleeing the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Arrest

Both episodes were captured on the victim’s surveillance cameras. The woman reported the incidents to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office on March 30. Two deputies conducted an initial investigation, escalating the case to the General Investigations Unit. The victim positively identified Oliva from a photo provided by officers.

On April 3, at 7:50 p.m., officers arrested Oliva at his residence located around Southwest 112 Place and 222 Street. He was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where formal charges were filed.

Oliva faces three charges: two for attempted armed burglary and one for throwing a deadly missile, referring to the rocks thrown at the home. Under Florida law, these constitute second-degree felonies, each carrying a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

Pattern of Domestic Violence

This case adds to a pattern of similar incidents involving Cuban residents in Miami-Dade. In December 2025, Néstor Ángel García, 51, was arrested in Homestead for assaulting his ex-girlfriend after a two-year relationship. In February of the same year, Nelson Pérez Estrada appeared in county criminal court for attempting to kidnap his ex-partner with a machete.

Miami-Dade has the highest domestic violence rates in Florida: in 2019, there were 8,160 cases reported with 4,188 arrests and 30 fatalities.
