A woman was caught by surveillance cameras in a private business in Playa, Havana, as she stole a piece of meat and an employee's mobile phone, unaware of the installed security system.

The incident was publicly reported on Facebook by journalist Daniel Benítez, who received the account and images from a follower directly affected by the theft.

"She entered the kitchen of a private business and stole a piece of meat and my nephew's mobile phone today. I'd appreciate it if you could publish this. I'm sending you photos and the video from the camera, which she didn't think was there."

Rising Theft in Havana's Private Businesses

This kind of theft has become increasingly common in Havana's private businesses. Recently, a couple was filmed stealing a cellphone at La Flaca café, another incident that was captured on camera.

Other similar cases have involved food. In one of the most notable incidents, two women stole large blocks of cheese from a small business, also recorded by the establishment's cameras.

Security Footage as a Tool for Public Justice

Security recordings have become the primary tool for public reporting. Given the perception of impunity, many owners choose to share the videos directly on social media rather than going to the police, hoping public pressure will serve as a means of identification and control.

The Playa municipality is no stranger to this trend. Previously, a news story spread when an individual was recorded stealing two bicycles in broad daylight in the same area.

Among the most unusual cases in Havana, three women were caught stealing six bottles of whisky using a rare method, and another person stole a box of products from a café in Marianao while the owners were present.

Common Questions About Surveillance and Theft in Havana

How effective are surveillance cameras in reducing theft?

Surveillance cameras serve as a deterrent to potential thieves and provide crucial evidence for identifying perpetrators. In many cases, the footage aids in public identification and social media exposure.

Why do business owners prefer social media over police reports?

Many business owners feel that social media can be a quicker and more effective way to identify thieves and alert the community, given the perceived lack of timely response from law enforcement.
