This past Saturday, Cuban singer-songwriter Amaury Pérez Vidal was awarded the 2025 National Music Award during a ceremony at Havana's National Museum of Fine Arts.

Photos circulated showing Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, his wife Lis Cuesta, and renowned musician Silvio Rodríguez attending the event, which the Cuban Presidency's social media described as an "intimate and modest" gathering.

Another image captured Pérez receiving the award diploma from the regime's Culture Minister, Alpidio Alonso.

Amaury Pérez's Political Allegiances

For years, Amaury Pérez has been closely aligned with Cuba's official cultural stance. His proximity to the country's top authorities, including Díaz-Canel and his family, as well as his longstanding support for previous political leadership, positions him as a public advocate of the communist agenda.

Struggles Amidst Loyalty

Recently, Pérez expressed that he endures the current crisis "like any other Cuban," yet remains steadfast in his allegiance to the regime. In a message shared by Abel Prieto, president of Casa de las Américas, Pérez vowed to maintain his stance despite facing "endless blackouts and various shortages."

Pérez initially left Facebook due to family health issues, but he also acknowledged that the political climate influenced his decision. "The attacks against my country made it impossible for me to live a parallel life, as some suggested," he stated.

Despite the daily challenges, Pérez insists on staying in Cuba. "I'm here in Cuba, as you know, and I won't abandon this fact, even when everything (living in a 'lower middle-class' neighborhood) prevents me from ignoring the ongoing blackouts and shortages," he wrote.

"I'm just another person who refuses to give up being part of my neighbors' hardships. And who are my neighbors? Ten million fellow citizens," he declared in his letter.

Previous Controversy

Last October, while receiving the Maestro of Youth Distinction from the Hermanos Saíz Association for his artistic contributions, Pérez stirred controversy by referring to Fidel Castro as "his friend, the Commander in Chief," sparking debate both within and outside Cuba.
