Medicare Chief Suggests Cuban Government's Role in Florida Health Fraud

Saturday, April 4, 2026 by Bella Nunez

The head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Mehmet Oz, widely recognized as Dr. Oz, suggested this Saturday that the Cuban government might be complicit in a large-scale health fraud scheme in South Florida. He also revealed plans for raids targeting those accountable.

In an interview with Fox News, Dr. Oz, who was in South Florida as part of a federal campaign against public health program fraud, shared his suspicions. "I'm currently here in South Florida," he stated. "Remarkably, there are twice as many durable medical equipment providers as there are McDonald's restaurants. And it's not because Bobby Kennedy is shutting down McDonald's. This is rampant fraud, and we suspect Cuban government involvement!"

This is not Dr. Oz's first time pointing to the Cuban community in this regard. Previously, he accused Cuban immigrants of falsely billing federal health programs for millions.

Federal Measures to Combat Fraud

Among the actions taken by the administration is a nationwide six-month moratorium on approving new durable medical equipment providers—precisely the sector where much of the detected fraud in South Florida is concentrated.

The history of such schemes is extensive. Earlier investigations had exposed a network of 85 fake medical equipment companies linked to Cuban exiles who defrauded Medicare before fleeing the United States.

Recent Convictions Highlight Ongoing Issues

In more recent events, Ariel Núñez Finalet was sentenced to three years in prison in Miami for his role in one of these Medicare fraud schemes.

According to Dr. Oz, the scale of the issue is significant nationwide, with an estimated $100 billion in Medicaid fraud. This makes the current federal crackdown one of the most ambitious in recent years.
