Cuban-American actor Andy García has contributed his voice and writing talents to "Get Out," a fresh anthem for Cuba's freedom released this Friday in collaboration with Cuban singer San Miguel Pérez.
The announcement was made last Monday through an Instagram reel by San Miguel Pérez, confirming that the song was penned by both artists and produced by Pérez alongside producer Jake Carmona.
The shared snippet begins with a heartfelt nod to the island: "Water, sweet water, my beautiful Cuba, my lovely Cuba."
Following this, the political message is delivered bluntly: "Pack your suitcase and buy your ticket, because this won't last much longer, everyone knows it here. Tell your neighbor, tell the black woman and the redhead, inform your grandpa who sells little hands."
The title of the song harks back to Willy Chirino's classic, which was re-released in September 2021 as "Que se vayan ya" with Lenier, El Micha, El Chacal, Osmani García, and Srta. Dayana, becoming one of the anthems of the Cuban freedom movement following the July 11 protests that year.
Before this track, "Patria y Vida"—released in February 2021 by Yotuel, Gente de Zona, Descemer Bueno, El Funky, and Maykel Osorbo—had become the anthem of the 11J protests, winning two Latin Grammys that same year: Song of the Year and Best Urban Song.
Andy García's involvement in this new project is neither coincidental nor isolated. Born in Regla, Havana, on April 12, 1956, and exiled to Miami since 1961 at the age of five, García has been a steadfast activist against the Cuban dictatorship for decades.
In November 2021, he publicly supported the Civic March for Change on November 15 alongside musician Arturo Sandoval. In October 2022, he unequivocally declared: "Long live a Free Cuba! How long will the abuses continue?"
In February 2023, he participated in the album "José Martí, Versos de Cuba, Canciones de Libertad," performing the piece "La Cuba mía," joining a long list of exiled artists using music as a political tool to denounce the regime.
His connection to music is not a recent development: in 2005, he won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy as producer of the album "¡Ahora Sí!" by the legendary Cachao, showcasing his deep-rooted involvement in Cuban musical projects.
