Enmanuel Barrera, a 17-year-old Cuban infielder, has recently left Cuba and headed to the Dominican Republic. He plans to join the Sánchez Academy, where he will prepare for a potential signing with a Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

Francys Romero, a journalist focused on Cuban baseball prospects, broke the news on his Facebook page and his platform Beisbol FR.

Born in Camagüey, Barrera shined in the Under-15 and youth categories representing his province. By 2025, he was part of the pre-selection for the Cuban Under-18 national team, making him one of the most closely watched young talents in Cuban baseball.

Cuban Talent Seeks Opportunity Abroad

Barrera is praised for his batting abilities and versatility, playing both third base and shortstop. Romero noted, "Barrera has skills as a hitter and plays both third base and shortstop. He will be training at the Sánchez Academy."

This academy, established by former MLB player Alex Sánchez in Santo Domingo, has become a pivotal training ground for Cuban prospects seeking exposure to MLB scouts.

The Exodus of Cuban Baseball Talent

Recent months have seen a surge of young players training at the academy. In October 2025, catcher José Muñiz and outfielder Cristopher García arrived, followed by shortstop Alex Brayan Batista in January 2026.

Barrera's departure is part of a broader trend of Cuban talent seeking opportunities in the Dominican Republic, a move driven by restrictive policies in Cuba that hinder direct negotiations with MLB teams.

The 2025-2026 international signing period has been particularly active for Cuban baseball, with several young infielders securing lucrative contracts: Jaider Suárez with the Kansas City Royals for $1.7 million, Joniel Hernández with the San Diego Padres for $1.4 million, Leonardo Sevilla with the Arizona Diamondbacks for $750,000, and Karell Naranjo with the Cleveland Guardians for $625,000, all having passed through the Caribbean island.

In March 2026, 15-year-old infielder Anyelo Fleitas also made his way to the Dominican Republic after leading the National Under-15 league with a .439 average and 26 runs batted in.

At just 17 years old, Barrera joins a wave of Cuban prospects who see this path as the only viable route to a professional baseball career.
