The legal representative for 16-year-old Cuban teenager Jonathan David Muir Burgos, who is currently detained at the Technical Department of Investigations (DTI) in Ciego de Ávila, is advocating for a change in his detention status. The lawyer argues that Jonathan’s critical health condition warrants his release to home confinement, at least until his trial.
Pastor Mario Félix Lleonart, director of the Patmos Institute based in Washington D.C., told Martí Noticias, "The family recently appointed an attorney who is using Jonathan's updated medical records of chronic illnesses to argue that he cannot remain in such conditions. Therefore, he should be sent home, even if it’s under house arrest pending trial."
Lleonart further expressed hope that Jonathan would be released on humanitarian grounds, avoiding a trial altogether. "If they proceed with a trial, they would have to put all of Morón's residents on trial, as the entire town took to the streets demanding freedom," he added.
Mounting Pressure for Jonathan's Release
As of Monday, March 30, Jonathan will have been detained for two weeks. His arrest occurred on March 16 when he and his father, Pastor Elier Muir, responded to a police summons in Morón. Jonathan was then transferred to the DTI, while his father was released later that day at 5:30 p.m.
The detention of a 16-year-old with health complications has sparked increasing national and international pressure on the Cuban authorities.
Legal Efforts Amidst Political Scrutiny
Despite the rejection of a habeas corpus petition on March 25, Jonathan's defense team is exploring alternative legal avenues to secure his release or at least facilitate his return to his family's home.
Jonathan's arrest coincides with the largest wave of protests against the Cuban dictatorship in recent history, drawing attention from human rights organizations and international political figures.
U.S. lawmakers, including María Elvira Salazar and Carlos Giménez, have publicly demanded the immediate release of the teenager, increasing the pressure on the Cuban regime to end his detention.
