Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old from Barcelona, ended her life on Thursday through euthanasia at 6:00 PM at Sant Camil Hospital in Sant Pere de Ribes, Barcelona. This marked the end of a 601-day legal battle that kept her alive against her wishes and became one of the most talked-about cases in Spain's recent history.

According to reports from El Mundo, Noelia officially requested euthanasia in April 2024 after becoming paraplegic due to a fall from the fifth floor of a building on October 4, 2022. This tragic event was an attempt to end her life following multiple sexual assaults.

The irreversible spinal injury resulted in chronic neuropathic pain, incontinence, sensory loss, and complete dependence.

The Catalonia Guarantee and Evaluation Commission unanimously approved her request on July 18, 2024, citing her condition as "severe, chronic, and incapacitating suffering."

Legal Battles and Family Opposition

However, her father, Gerónimo Castillo, represented by the Christian Lawyers organization, managed to temporarily halt the procedure on August 1 of that year, sparking a series of legal appeals through all possible courts.

The Catalonia High Court upheld the euthanasia decision in September 2025.

The Supreme Court dismissed the father's appeal on January 29, 2026. Shortly after, the Constitutional Court unanimously denied the appeal for protection.

Ultimately, the European Court of Human Rights rejected the request for precautionary measures on March 10, 2026, exhausting all available legal avenues.

Noelia's Final Days and Legacy

Last Sunday, Noelia gave her final public interview on Antena 3, the result of 12 hours of recording. With calmness, she shared her decision: "I have four days left because on the 26th, they will perform euthanasia."

She also bid farewell to her grandmother Carmen, summarizing her stance against her family's opposition with: "A father's happiness should not come before a daughter's or her life."

The procedure took around 15 minutes, beginning with sedation through three medications. Noelia declined her parents' presence during the process. Her mother expressed, "We don't agree, but we are with her."

Noelia Castillo is recognized as the youngest person to receive euthanasia in Spain since the enactment of Organic Law 3/2021 on euthanasia in June 2021.

Between then and mid-2025, Spain had performed 1,034 euthanasias, with an average age of 65. Her last public words encapsulated the essence of her struggle: "I just want to leave in peace and stop suffering."
